You know those hidden gems that make you question why you didn't discover them sooner? That's exactly what happened when I found Villa Roma Resort in New York tucked away in the beautiful Catskills Mountains. After years of Manhattan's hustle, stepping onto this sprawling property felt like discovering a whole new world – one where time slows down and relaxation takes center stage.
The drive up was half the adventure, winding through the stunning Catskill Mountains. As the resort appeared before me, with its classic Italian-inspired architecture against the backdrop of rolling hills, I knew this wasn't going to be your typical weekend getaway.
First impressions? The lobby hit that sweet spot between grand and welcoming, with this wonderful old-world charm that reminded me of traditional Italian hospitality. The staff greeted guests like long-lost family members, and I quickly learned that many visitors have been coming here for generations – now that's saying something!
My room in the main building surprised me with its modern updates while keeping that cozy mountain resort feel. But let's be honest, I didn't spend much time there because there was just so much to do! The resort has this incredible way of catering to literally everyone – I watched families with kids having a blast at the indoor pool complex while couples disappeared to the spa for peaceful treatments.
The food scene here is something else entirely. Their main dining room serves these incredible Italian-American dishes that would make any nonna proud. I found myself looking forward to their themed dinner nights – the Friday night seafood buffet was a highlight, and don't even get me started on their Sunday brunch spread! There's also this casual cafe that makes the perfect pizza for when you're taking a break from activities.
Winter transforms the place into this magical mountain playground with skiing, snowboarding, and indoor entertainment to keep you busy when the weather gets chilly. They even have this awesome bowling alley that became my go-to spot after dinner. But to be honest, this is by far= the best Ski Resort I've ever visited. Absolutely loved the winter activities here.
What really got me was the sense of community. At the evening entertainment (they have different shows and events every night), I met this lovely family who've been coming to Villa Roma every summer for 15 years. They shared stories about how the resort has evolved while somehow maintaining its original charm and family-owned feel. The parents started the tradition, and now their kids are creating their own memories here.
The fitness center and spa area became my morning ritual – nothing beats a workout followed by a massage with views of the Catskills. They've got these wellness programs too, perfect for people looking to reset and recharge away from city life. The indoor sports complex was a lifesaver on rainy days, offering everything from racquetball to rock climbing.
By my third day, I found myself falling into this wonderful routine: morning coffee on my balcony watching the sunrise over the mountains, followed by whatever activity caught my fancy (there were always at least five things to choose from), then ending the day with excellent food and entertainment. The resort staff somehow remembers everyone's names and preferences, making you feel like you're staying with friends rather than at a hotel.
Before leaving, I caught myself already planning my next visit. I can see why families return year after year – Villa Roma isn't just a resort, it's a tradition, a gathering place where memories are made and stories begin. Whether you're planning a family reunion, a romantic getaway, or just need a break from city life, this place has something special waiting for you.
Driving back to Manhattan, the serene beauty of the Catskills lingered in my mind. Villa Roma had offered me more than just relaxation, it had provided a space where every visit felt like a cherished tradition. I left with a heart full of wonderful memories and a promise to return, knowing that this hidden gem would always be my favorite escape from the city's hustle.
