Aspendos Theatre

Aspendos is located in the city center of the ancient city Aspendos which is about 25 miles to the east of Antalya.

People coming to Aspendos must stop by to come to visit the Greco Roman theatre.

This is the best preserved theatre of anitquity.

The remains inside this theatre are far the most perfect that I have seen in Turkey.

The seats remain almost perfect.

You can also see the lobbies and galleries leading to the theatre.

This theatre was built in the 2nd Century AD during Marcus Aurelius Roman Emperor reign.

This project was created by Zeno who was a Greek architect born in Aspendos.

You can see how grand this theatre really is.

Around the top of the back seats of the theatre is a series of arches. They are ornamental circular brick columns.

Even though this was built in the Roman times, the building displays many features that are similar to what you find in Greek theatres.

The auditorium is built against a hillside.

The auditorium has a diameter of 96 meters.

At the top of the stage wall, there are 18 beam slots.

The slots would take up the upper and lower beam of a cantilevered roof structure.

You can see 18 corresponding slots near the top of the wall facing towards the stage.

The roof beams run from these slots to the front of the stage, a distance of just over 13 metres.

The whole theatre can hold 7,000 people.

The lower section contains 20 rows of seat, while the upper one has 21 rows.

We came here in the late afternoon so it is not so crowded.

Usually the theatre of Aspendos is very crowded.

And if you come during April to November season, you will see crowd of tourists coming here because this is very close to the seaside resort of Antalya.

Enjoy,
Rosa
