Tarsus is known for the Cleopetra's Gate
Tarsus used to be the capital of the Roman province of Cilicia. At that time, the city was thriving and walls of fortifications were built to protect the city.
There were actually 3 main gates that people can use to come into the city.
- the Mountain Gate that goes towards the Taurus mountains
- the Adana Gate that goes to the city Adana
- the Port gate that goes to the Mediterranean coast.
It is this Port gate that is now later named the Cleopetra's Gate.
Why Port gate is called Cleopetra's Gate
The Egyptian Queen Cleopetra VII used to enter into the city of Tarsus using this gate.
She came to Tarsus in 41 BC.
And this is when she met Mark Antony.
In short, she made this trip to Tarsus into a grand tour such that Mark Antony could not resist her charm and they became lovers. Thus this is named Celopetra's gate to commemorate the event.
Today's ancient Cleopetra's gate
This gate was restructured time and time again and what we see today dates back to the Middle Ages.
The walls of Tarsus were all demolished in 1835.
Only this gate of Cleopetra survived and have been preserved until today.
How To get to Cleopetra's Gate?
The Clepetra's Gate is on the main street of Tarsus. As you drive along on the main road, you will see this big gate in the middle of the big street.
You can't miss it.
With the two lanes of Ismet Pasha Boulevard, you will see the structure right in the middle between the 2 lanes.
There is no parking space at all where the Gate is, so you need to park your car on the side streets.
Enjoy your visit there,
