Dubai - Centre of commerce
Dubai is known for its center of commerce that was already quite well established back in the the late 19th Century.
The Arabian souks were drawing attention of traders all over the world. People came to Dubai to trade.
While the modern city thrives with indoor malls, the traditional Arabian markets are still a crucial part of their daily life and trade.
Even the design of the buildings take you back in time.
Not to mention when you see them all dressing in their traditional Arabian clothing.
Dubai Arabian Souks Vibrant Marketplaces
The market places are filled with goodies.
It will take you at least a day to wander through the city's Bustling Souks to experience a bit of the Arabian culture.
There are 4 types of Souks in the old town:
- The Gold Souk
- The Spice Souk
- The Perfume Souk
- The Textile Souk
Gold Souk
Of course the Gold Souk is the most popular which I devoted one post to talk about as this is the reason why everyone comes here as they can't find it elsewhere in the world.
Spice Souk
This is the next most interesting souk for me as they have such a variety that we don't find our homeland.
The Spice Souk is situated in the narrow alleyways.
You often them selling dried fruits, frankincense, herbs and spices such as: cloves, cinnamon, saffron, cardamom, sumac, coriander and nutmeg.
All these spices are imported from Iran, India and Pakistan.
Take a look at each one of these spices.
Don't they just impress you with their multicolor?
They are so so colorful.
And this is what marks the Dubai's Spice Souk.
And not only colorful, these spices are also aromatic.
You can almost smell them as I take you down the spice souks in this post.
So when you come to Dubai, it is a must to spend half a day walking around these spice souks and brace yourself for a sensory sensation.
Smell them.
Dubai markets have a variety of myriad flavors and recipes.
The local merchants will greet you as you make your way into their shops and making your way through all these traditional spice market in this Dubai's heritage area.
Make sure you savour the atmosphere of the past as you smell these mounds of aromatic herbs and spices that are spilling out from their large baskets at every way you turn on the spice market street.
Not all of these spices are used for cooking.
We bought some of these spices to take home to our friends and family.
Look at the following photo and you will see how happy the man is in the middle shop as he steps out to wave to us.
Spices are sold both by weight and in packets.
Tomorrow, I will take you to the the Perfume Souk and the Textile Souk as they are next to one another.
