Chitradurga - Rock Fort
The rock Fort is named after the city Chitradurga as Chitradurga Fort. The name comes from the chitrakaldurga which actually is Picture sque Fort. The Fort is known for its as 7 rounds built before the central peak. Many rocky mountains adjacent to each other has given an advantage for the structure of fort.
The Fort was built in 11th to 13th century by the nayakas who were in the ruling dynasties of chalukyas and hoysalas - Nayakas of Chitradurga. The major contribution of building and expanding the Fort goes to the Nayakas.
The above picture is a beautiful view of flat land below the Fort and the windmills installed on near by hills.
As mentioned earlier the Fort is built by granite stones which are arranged in a series of 7 concentric structure and hence also called as yeelu suttina Koote "The 7 rounds Fort".
The fort is well planned to accommodate all the daily needs of the people living inside the Fort. Like the big walls for protection from enemies and bad weather, the big open spaces like passages, store house for grains and edible oil.
Here are some pictures from my Visit to Chitradurga.
