Hello friends, in today's article I want to tell you about the birthplace of the famous Italian poet and writer, who is certainly known throughout Europe, because he was one of the most important literary figures in the 14th century.
the town where Boccaccio was born is Certaldo alta a medieval village located a few kilometres from Florence in the beautiful region of Tuscany.
It is certainly not a world-famous location, but from my point of view it is definitely worth a visit, also because for some time now it has been awarded the orange flag as one of the most important tourist villages.
As I was saying, the village is divided between Certaldo Alta and Certaldo Bassa, which are connected by a beautiful funicular railway.
Of course, the main street of the town is dedicated to Boccaccio and leads to another important new symbol of the town, the Palazzo Pretorio, which was practically the seat of the town's most important family, the Counts Alberti, and this cannot be seen from the coat of arms on the building.
This palace can now be visited by tourists and you can see the historical archive of the family, and the rooms that were once used as prisons, the interior of the building has been decorated by the greatest Florentine painters of the 1400s.
so if you're in the area, it's definitely a must-see.
Of course, in September the most interesting events take place in the village, such as the historical procession in its own right in typical medieval costumes, and at the end of this event there is a performance inspired by the novellas of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron.
Of course, as well as being able to visit the house where Giovanni Boccaccio was born, there is also the tomb, which you can see in the photo above.
His tomb is a bit of a mystery because many people have claimed over the years that it did not belong to the poet, but then studies were commissioned, and this certificate or that the skull was a reference to the poet, it must also be remembered that this town was razed to the ground during the Second World War, so for a while it was not known what happened to the tomb.
Thank you if you have read the article so far I hope you have found it very interesting and I hope you have the opportunity to visit this country on a future trip to Italy.
