It is not very common that a country or a region has more than one capital city but this is exactly what happened on the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago consisting of 7 islands located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North-Western Africa.
The two biggest cities of the archipelago – Santa Cruz (found on the island of Tenerife) and Las Palmas (found on the island of Gran Canaria) were arguing over which of them should be the capital for a long time.
Eventually, it was decided that both of the cities will be the co-capitals of the Canary Islands.
Home to more than 200,000 people, Santa Cruz (officially known as Santa Cruz de Tenerife) is famous for hosting what is generally considered the second largest carnival in the world (right after the legendary Carnival in Rio de Janeiro).
I visited the city in October, which is still the low season on Tenerife, so I could enjoy a nice, relatively crowd-free strolling through the city center. It offers an interesting mix of old and modern architecture. Here is a shot I took on one of the main streets in the modern part of the city.
