Today I want to tell you about a magnificent medieval festival that I attended in the fantastic location of Monteriggioni in the heart of Tuscany, among cypresses and fields immersed in the medieval castle, the perfect place for a theme party and that of Monteriggioni is one of the most beautiful in the Tuscany. To get there it took us about two hours by car and we had to climb up to the castle on foot because the already very full car parks were far away.
The festival is called Monteriggioni di torri si corona, that is, it is full of towers as if it were dressing up, a phrase written by Dante, the divine poet, it is a medieval city in the Sienese countryside, it is a castle built around 1200 and it is said that it was surrounded by charcoal piles and protected by shutters, the position was certainly very strategic for keeping the whole valley under control. As soon as we arrived we took the ticket to enter at a cost of five euros, the castle alone can be visited in about two hours but obviously during the festival there is so much to do and see, shows, dances, demonstrations and stalls with food and handicrafts and also the tavern!
As soon as we arrived we immediately took a walk in the main streets and I was immediately stopped by the court jester who made some funny skits, the beloo is that here the figures entertain the visitors with funny scenes and jokes, it was very hot but the square of the castle was full and we visited the camp and then since we were hungry we headed to the tavern. To eat there were three taverns, each offering rich typical medieval dishes, meat, cabbage and lentil soup, cockerel, chicken soup, chickpeas and bean stew, bread and cheese and cured meats, all excellent but certainly not light. However, the choice was wide and we were lucky to find a seat almost immediately, there were long tables and benches.
We had some lager beer, perfect for the torrid heat and two porchetta sandwiches, really excellent sandwiches, with very spicy meat at reasonable prices, I would have eaten dozens! Long live the porchetta sandwich! For those who didn't eat meat, there were vegetarian or vegetable soups, however everywhere there was a strong smell of grilled meat!
Then we continued our walk and met other extras and saw some shows, the jester made us laugh like crazy but the monk with the chastity crown was also a big laugh, all very goliardic and funny. Then there were also the angels and the prophets who were also really funny, furthermore walking through the castle with its towers was really wonderful, a wonderful atmosphere, to finish we took a tour of the stalls showing the old trades, the surgeon, the blacksmith, the herbalist, with very interesting explanations. The festival was really good and I love the opportunity to meet it.
