The Traditional custodians of the area are the Yaegl Aboriginal people and the Ulmara name comes from the Aboriginal word meaning bend in the river. A farmer bought land there in 1857 and it soon became a busy trading village on the Clarence River. It seems pretty quite nowadays but has been very well restored and looked after.
There is a vehicular cable ferry across the river but we just settled for a walk around town and some cake and coffee at a local café.
It took me a while to remember but I had been to the place, well sort of , many times, the old pacific highway between Sydney and Brisbane passed right through it about 300 kilometres south of Brisbane. We have driven this road and through this town many time over the years but never stopped until now.
