Stokes Bay is a big area of water on the North coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. We had heard it was voted the best the best Beach in Australia in 2023 and were keen to check it out. It was our last stop on a long day of tourist sightseeing around this wonderful island. My first impression was not good to say the least; I really was wondering how they measure and judge these things. @consciouscat reminded me that there was some secrete entrance to the right of the car parking area. It all sounded a bit too Woo Woo and fairy tale like for me. Just some sort of clever advertising scam to get the tourist in. Then I noticed a few people indeed transiting at the rock face and a pile of school bags. Surely any Local Council would have safety issues and put warnings and safety barriers up if there was some sort of dangerous entry way. No barriers, just a help directional arrow and a strong rip warning. This was starting to get more intersting. The path got pretty tight and was about 50 metre long. I had to duck in places. Then hey pesto there we were, this was what all the fuss was about. The cleanest of water and purest of sand. Kangaroo Island get a lot of wind, we had been battered all day, but Stokes Bay Beach was perfectly sheltered under the curving cliffs. The wind chill had all but disappeared and it was heating up fast. It would have been great for a swim, but we did not bring anything with us, and we still had to drive back to our accommodation. Now to find the way back again!
