Millmerran is about two hundred kilometres west of Brisbane on the Darling Downs a bit past Toowoomba. We were heading south down the inland Newel highway trying to stay away from the Christmas holiday crowds on the coast late last year. I had heard of this place through work as we had an electrician in the company I worked for based here full time. I though it was a bit strange for a small country town but he was picking up a lot of work at the power station and coal mine nearby. At the time this power station was a pretty progressive set up using recycled treated sewerage water and clean coal to produce electricity and pump it into the national grid. Clean coal just had more advanced combustion methods and less emissions than the old coal burners but is still not as good as wind and solar though there still seems a need for all types of electrical generation for our ever growing cities.

The train line was closed back in 2010 but it was good they were able to keep a few of the old building.

It seems early European settlers named this place Millmerran after two local Jarowair Aboriginal words ”meel” meaning ”eye” and ”merran” meaning ”to look out. There is not much of a lookout but compared to most of the surrounding flat country it makes sense.

I thought the tepee monument was a bit weird. It was build to commemorate Sporting Shooters event called Rendezvous which is about muzzleloading guns and lifestyle of 1500-1800s which is one of the towns annual events.
