I am sure I have been to this Island before as a young child. So I was keen to check it out again and see if it jogged any old memories but nothing sprung to mind, basically the only real memories I could muster were the old train bridge across the river at the northern end of town. So the whole walk was pretty much like a whole new experience.Even though it was the middle of winter we had some nice weather The traditional owners of the area, The Gumbaynggirr people call the island Giidany Mirrlarl meaning the moon sacred place and moon is the protector of the mutton birds which nest here for breeding.We did the local parkrun along that break wall, All those water views makes it one of my most favorite parkrun events I have done.We did not see any Mutton-birds as they usually nest here over summer but we did see plenty of there burrows.Captain John Korffs sailed into this harbour back in 1847 to wait out a storm. He and his sons went ashore and named it Korffs harbour. A government gazette incorrectly spelt it as Coffs Harbour which it has been known as ever since.There is lots of nice coast line around here that would be great to explore.This Island marks the southern boundary of the Solitary Islands Marine Park. It is interesting to think that millions of year ago the sea level was 100s of metres lower and all the Solitary islands were just mountain tops on a vast plain.A good place for some whale watching but there were none to be seen on this day.There was this solid raised walking path to help protect the nesting areas.Overall a great little walk with some wonderful views that only too a hour to cover the 3.7 kilometre out and back. It did get steep in a couple of places.
