1991 was a big travel year for me. After backpacking through some of South East Asia, India and Nepal with people I had just met along the way. I decided to do a stop over and see a bit of Africa before heading to Europe. I just had to wait a couple of days in India and organise a flight from New Delhi to Nairobi.

I remember getting a little ill on my last few day in India and lost a fair bit of weight could not keep any food down, none of the medication I had with me helped but a quick visit to the nearby chemist and some local tablets fixed my stomach quickly and I was on my way.

The travel agent selling me the one way ticket from India to Kenya was a bit confused with my lack of itinerary and plans, they wanted to check my visa. I had an India Visa in my Aussie passport, no problems but they insisted I would need a Kenyan one too.  I had read English Passport holders did not need one and at the time I was a dual passport holder as my parents were English. I think the travel agent thought I had a passport for every country and was a bit shocked to see with the two.

Luckily I had no issues just using my U.K passport on entry to Kenya, though I am not sure I would try it again nowadays and have not bothered renewing it.

Landing in Nairobi late at night, all alone was a bit of a culture shock after feeling pretty comfortable cruising around Asia for a couple of months. Luckily for me there were other backpacking travellers and we all shared a taxi to some accommodation. We just used to wing everything out of the lonely planet guide books. It was cold and there was no hot water in our budget accommodation, I thought Africa was going to be hot! The next day we found other other accommodation explored a bit of Kenyan Capital and booked multi day safari tour.

It was amazing to see so many different animal just wandering around in the park not that far from each other with no fences keeping them in different areas like they do back home in our zoos.

A Massi Mara Village. After our day cruising around the park animal spotting our guide asked if we picked up his mother from this Village and dropped her off in town for a medical appointment. The little side trip was interesting to see a Village in within the national park. The woman looked more like his sister than his mother but I suppose living in natural nature conditions might be really good for you.

Looking back now I wish I had invested in a better bigger Camera but I am lucky to have even been there and have the few snaps shots I do.
