After an enjoyable week skiing in the Australian Snowy Mountains it was time for the long trip home. We were going home via Sydney to visit some relatives and pick up another new parkrun for me. Goulburn is located about two hours from Sydney and three hours from Jindabyne so it was the perfect place to stop for some lunch. The Hume Highway bypasses Goulburn but it is good to get off the highway and do a bit of exploring rather than just driving straight through all the time.

Goulburn was Australia's first inland city in founded in 1863 and has a lot of grand buildings.

Belmore Park is in the centre of Goulburn City. It’s an obvious landmark that seemed well utilised by locals and visitors like us. It has pretty gardens, a fountain, a glass house for growing even more summer-loving plants over their cold winters, as well as a war memorial and a useful toilet!

Finally, we saw The Big Merino on the outskirts of town. It stands 15 metres tall and has a gift shop next door. Australia has a lot of ”big” things and it makes total sense to have a merino sculpture as Goulburn is prime sheep and wool country. There is lots more to see there but that will have to wait for another time.
