Dunwich is the gate way to Minjerribah or North Stradbroke Island. It can be easily accessed by the passenger or vehicular ferry. On this occasion we took over car so we could show Caroline’s mum around. It took about 40 minutes and cost $250 return, not the cheapest day trip but well worth the effort if you have limited time. The passenger ferry is much quicker and cheaper at $30 for the ferry ride and a bus to get you to the main tourist area. The car just gave us more options to see a few extra places as well. The ferry ride over is always relaxing and definitely makes me feel like your holidays.

The ferries are aways busy as it only way to get to the island. The Island is the second biggest sand island in the world, there used to be a lot of sand mining done here but now it is mostly tourists and holiday makers.

Myora Springs is just a few kilometres down the road from Dunwich most people just drive by and miss it but it’s a great little spot. A fresh water spring for swimming and it also supply water to the town. There is also a Shell midden on the far bank which are the remains of shellfish food once gathered and eaten by Quandamooka Aboriginal people who have been in the area for thousands years.
