I was in this part of the world in my youth on a back packing adventure way back in the 1990s. Fast forward to 2023 and we were on a short South East Asia loop holiday trying to pick up a few International parkruns and visit some family. It was fascinating to see all the changes in different areas but I could not remember or even recall ever hearing anything about Bukit Bintang. A quick google found there was not much here back in the 1990s and it was considered the dodgy part of town. If that was the case were was no wonder I could not remember it even if we did pass through.

It is defiantly not the dodgy part of Kuala Lumpur now. We got a grab taxi to Patronus towers and KLCC park. Then got on a few public bus to this shopping wonderland. The bus was not the best idea as it was packed out and with all the public holiday traffic for Depalii we decided to just get off and walk. It was very hot and humid but nice just walking the main shopping areas.

Malaysia has a lot of modern development lots of very tall buildings and even a monorail system. You can just make out the support system for it to the right of all the cars..

The starhill high end shopping complex, with all the big names and luxurious brands. It was like they were having a competition with Orchard Road in Singapore to see who could be more extravagant.

We kept ducking into some of the shopping centres to cool down in the air conditioning.

The Bintang Walk was busy and trendy, you can just make out the Merdeka 118 sky scrapper which is the second tallest building in the world. Merdeka means Independence and it was designed to resemble the Malaysian leader in 1957 chanting Merdeka with his hand up in the air.

Bukit Bintang also now has a Japanese style Shibuya pedestrian crossing.

I really liked notes and coins of Malaysia each were all colourful well designed.

You will need a lot of this stuff if you going to visit and buy things at Bukit Bintang, but of course walking and people watching is totally free.
