We have done quite a few South East Queensland summit hikes so on this particular weekend we decided to mix it up a bit with a low tide beach hike. Bribie Island is about 70 kilometres north of Brisbane which takes about an 1 and 15 minutes to drive from the city. Much of the island is a National Park and is the smallest of three islands that surround Moreton Bay. The northern tip goes all the way up to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast.

For me the sandals seemed like a great idea at the time but I had not worn them much before and the salt and sand made some big blisters. I ended up having to finish the walk barefoot. Caroline didn’t have any issues.

What perfect weather and cloudless blue skies. There were quite a few other people enjoying a beach walk too.

The southern end of the island is protected from the wind which is what allows for these crystal clear waters.

There were quite a few of these lean-to huts along the foreshore, presumably made by kids or bored teenagers.

There are not a lot of waves on the southern end of Bribie Island as there are a couple of others large islands just off shore.

There was plenty more beach walking and other things to be done but we were happy with a 5 and bit kilometre, out and back (with a bit of a rest mid-way at the surf club turnaround).

The Bribie Island Butterfly House is a not for profit tourist attraction totally staffed by volunteers, we had a friend who volunteers there and was able to show us around. A fantastic way to see and learn about how they transform from caterpillars to amazing beautiful butterflies. It was great to walk through the enclosure and see so many different types close up.

Some big coloured butterflies I had never seen before.

Of course, Bribie Island also has the SS Koopa Trail 5 kilometre parkrun. It’s held on the the pathway that runs along the beautiful Pumicestone Passage. It’s two laps on the fast, flat concrete path. The parkrun is named after the park where it starts which was named after the SS Koopa passenger ferry that used to service the area.

That’s me, on the way to the finish line. And that’s Bribie Island bridge in the background, built in 1963 to connect the island to the mainland.

We will be back for more, thanks for reading.
