The Blue Gum trail is one of the best short hikes I have ever done. Close to a major Sydney train station makes for good access as well. I did not really plan this one too well, as I was just looking for a place to run the night before on google. The city streets did not look or feel that appealing when I noticed a trail on the map. It was only about 4 kilometres long but I thought if I just ran out and back I should be able to make it an easy 10km It is part of the great north wall which runs all the way from Newcastle to Sydney. It started off pretty easy.I was not far into my run when I realised it was a pretty technical and there would be a lot more walking rather than running, there was also a lot of stairs to tackle. It does not take long before you feel miles away from any city.Lots of interesting rock formations. The Fish Ponds not recommended for swimming as it close to a waste water plant but I was getting some great mirrored photos with the early sun light. No fish to be seen either.I just love the Xanthorrhoea grass trees between all this weather rock. These rocks are called the Washtub. There was not a lot of water flow when I was there but it must be impressive with more rain.Peep a boo!Australian Water Dragon Lizard. Some serious overhang. After a kilometre or so the trail headed out of the valley and into the Blue gum Forrest. The Blue Gum forest the trail is named after. It was so peaceful and quite but I was never too far away from civilization.
