“I’m so excited to kickstart the next 10 years of my life!” I’m planning a fun hiking trip with my sister to get stronger physically. We’ve been chatting about the possibility of hiking together once a month in the beautiful mountains nearby. For our first adventure, we decided to check out the ruins of Takatori Castle, which is famous for its stunning mountain views. This castle was abandoned during the Meiji era, and it’s such a beautiful spot perched high up.

The trail to the castle is well-maintained, making it a great hiking course. It takes us about 2 hours to hike uphill and around 1.5 hours to come back down. Once we reach the top, we’ll find ourselves at Tsubosaka Temple, a lovely old temple that dates back to around 700 AD. It’s really popular in the Kansai region! Right next to the temple, the path leads us to the ruins of Takatori Castle. We’ll find a charming little stone pagoda at the entrance, proudly displaying the words “Ruins of Takatori Castle.” I can’t wait for this adventure!

「１０年後の人生の為に今から準備する！」と銘打って、姉と一緒に体力強化の為にハイキングに行くことにしています。月に１回は一緒に近くの山にハイキングに行ければいいなと話をしています。そこで、山城で有名な、高取城跡へ行くことになりました。明治時代になり、廃城が決まった山城です。山に築城された美しいお城で、今ではその山城までの道がハイキングコースとして整備されています。全体のコースとしては登り２時間、下り１時間半程度のコースでした。ハイキングコースを登っていくと、壺阪寺の境内に着きます。壺阪寺は７００年前後に建設された古刹で、近畿ではとても有名なお寺です。そのお寺を横目に高取城跡へ続くハイキングコースが続いていました。入り口は小さな石塔がたっていて、高取城跡と彫られていました。

When you step into the ruins of Takatori Castle, the first thing you'll notice is the stunning castle wall that stands tall. My sister, who loves history and is super into castle design and ancient battle tactics, told me that these stone walls were built way back in the 1300s! She's done a ton of research on the subject, so she was excited to share her knowledge with me. As we wandered around looking at the walls, she explained how the castle was designed for that time period. One fun fact she shared was that the entrance was made small on purpose to keep intruders out. It really made me appreciate the cleverness behind the design!

高取城跡の入り口に入ると、見事な城壁が見えてきます。石垣は昔に作られた城壁と見えて、その作り方が結構原始的です。１３００年代に築城された城壁の為にそのような城壁の築城になっていると姉が言っていました。姉は歴史や城の設計、又、古戦場で使われた戦術などについて調べるのが好きで色々と自分でも調べている様でした。この日も石垣や城壁が見え始めると、この築城時期を考えるとこの設計方法が理解できるといった説明をしてくれました。また、入り口をわざと小さくして侵入者を防ぐ建築方法なども意図的に考えられて設計されていることも説明してくれました。

The hiking course had its fair share of ups and downs, and I couldn't help but realize that I really need to work on strengthening my legs and feet. My sister has been hitting the trails once a month, and she zooms past me with ease, probably thanks to her regular hikes! I'm not the biggest fan of lower body workouts, even at the gym, and I could definitely feel a bit of fatigue creeping in from my neglect. I started to notice some discomfort in my knees whenever we went downhill, which reminded me of the last hike I did. It’s clear that I need to focus on building up my leg and back muscles to tackle this better. But you know what? Despite those little aches, it was such a refreshing change of pace! I pushed those thoughts aside and enjoyed every moment of the hike, taking in all the beautiful scenery around me.

ハイキングコースは結構アップダウンがあって、改めて自分の足腰を鍛えないといけないと感じました。姉は月一回のハイキングを続けていて、その効果があるのか結構どんどん歩けていました。私は下半身のトレーニングはジムでも苦手で、少し怠っていたのが結果として出て、少し疲労感を感じ始めていました。特に、少しの下りがあると膝に違和感を感じ始めていました。前回、ハイキングに行った時も同じような違和感を感じたので、これは足腰の筋トレを続けないといけないと改めて感じました。それでも、きれいな景色を見ながらハイキングを進めているとそういった気持ちも吹き飛ぶほど気分転換になりました。

Besides Takatori Castle, Japan is home to many other stunning mountain castles! Iwamura Castle and Matsuyama Castle are often hailed as two of the most beautiful in the country. I'm really excited to climb both of these castles someday after I tackle Takatori Castle!

These mountain castles were constructed over 700 years ago during the early Sengoku Period. Back in the Warring States Period, Japan saw a lot of battles, and mountain castles were built as strategic fortifications to protect against attackers. They were usually situated on challenging mountains to make them harder to reach.

日本には高取城の他に、美しい山城がたくさんあります。その中でも特に美しい山城が、岩村城と松山城と言われています。こちらは日本の美しい山城と謳われている様で、高取城に登った後他の２つの山城もいつか登ってみたいと思いました。山城は戦国時代の初期に築城された城で、７００年以上前に築城された城たちです。戦国時代は日本全土で戦が行われ、山城は戦場になることを前提に設計されたお城です。だから、攻められにくい山に築城された城たちです。戦国時代も後期になると戦ではなく政治で民を統一する時代に入ると、山城は少なくなり平地に城が堀と共に築城されるようになります。日本史の歴史の移り変わりを見るうえでもとても興味深いハイキングになりました。

Last year, I had the chance to attend an amazing event called "Castle Festival 2024" in Osaka, where castle lovers from all over Japan gathered to chat and share their passion for castles. At the festival, I discovered the fascinating Takatori Castle Ruins. I went with my sister, and ever since then, I’ve been eager to visit the castle myself. So, it was such a wonderful experience to finally explore the ruins this time!

My dad was a huge history enthusiast, and he really enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing too. I’d say his interests definitely rubbed off on us! Raising kids can be tough, but I believe my dad found a lot of joy and wisdom in parenting, and that really shaped his life. Now that I’m older, it’s heartwarming to realize just how much we were influenced by him, often without even noticing.

昨年、大阪で開催されたお城フェスというイベントがあります。お城に関して色んな出店物が並び、そこで日本全国の城好きが集まり城に関しての情報交換をするといったイベントでした。高取城跡もそのフェスで知りました。昨年姉と一緒にそのイベントに参加し、この城のことを知ってからいつか行きたいと思っていました。だから、今回、この様に実際に城跡を見に行くことが出来て感無量です。父はとても歴史が好きな人でした。そして、ハイキングや登山が好きな人でした。私たちも父の影響を少なからず受けているのだと思います。子育ては本当に難しく、大変なことです。でも、子育てを通して多くの事を父は学び、人生を終えたのだと思います。私たちも知らず知らずのうちに父の影響を大きく得ていたのだなぁとこの年になって思い出されます。
