The journey continued
This is a continuation of my previous travel blog. I went to Campeche last November, and during my stay, I visited Edzná, a Mayan cultural site, with a group of volunteers that my friend had recruited through Work Away.I felt that there must have been a tribe, Mayans that conquered and controlled this vast area of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Maya culture did not have the appearance of a unified state, but rather they built large urban civilizations at each representative site, and formed a unified culture through exchanges with those cities.
前の続きの旅行ブログです。昨年の11月にカンペチェに遊びに行き、滞在中は友人がWork Awayから応募して募ったボランティアさんたちと一緒にマヤ文化の遺跡であるEdznáに行きました。1000年前に建造された建物とは思えないほど大きく、このユカタン半島の広大な土地を制覇し統制した部族がいたのだなぁと感じていました。マヤ文化は統一国家と言った体裁はとらず、各代表される遺跡に大きな都市文明を建設し、その都市との間の交流によって統一文化を形成していたようです。
As I wrote in my previous blog, Edzná is still very inaccessible for foreign tourists at this stage and is a tourist destination that has not yet been exposed to overtourism at this time. Thus, we were able to take our time and sightsee. Although some sections of the building are off-limits, some of them are allowed, and we climbed up to the building to experience its size.
前のブログにも書いたのですが、Edznáはまだ今の段階では外国人観光客にとってはアクセスがとても悪く、現時点ではまだオーバーツアリズムに晒されていない観光地です。よって、ゆっくりと観光することが出来ました。立ち入り禁止の区画もあるのですが、中には立ち入りが許可されている場所もあり、その大きさを体感するために建物に登ってみました。
What amazed me about the Mayan culture is that the use of the wheel has never been confirmed in this civilization, and I am simply amazed at the grandeur of the power of that time that built such a large ruin 1,000 years ago, when the wheel was not even used in this region. Climbing up to the building, we find a small room for the priests, which is small but well maintained. Although these rooms are small, it seems that the priests lived in these well-maintained areas to perform their ceremonial rituals.
マヤ文化でびっくりしたのが、なんとこの文明では「車輪」の使用が確認されていないと言うのです。1000年前、車輪もその存在がこの地域では使われない中、これほど大きな遺跡を建築したその当時の権力の壮大さにただただ驚きます。建物に登ると、そこには神官の為の小部屋が区画整備されています。小さい部屋ではありますが、その整備された区画で神事を行うため居住したようです。
This photo shows the tallest building among the ruins, which is prohibited to climb. With this building in front of it, buildings have been constructed on the left and right sides, and climbing is still permitted in that building at this time. The magnificent religious building was built on the same site, and when we stepped into it, we could see the sun and moon deities that the Mayans had advanced, and in the center of the altar, there was a pedestal for sacrifices.
この写真は登ることが禁止されている遺跡の中で一番高い建物です。この建物を正面に、左右対象に建物が建築され、そちらの建物には現時点ではまだ登ることが許可されています。対象に建築されたその壮大な宗教施設に、踏み入れるとマヤ人が進行した太陽や月の神々がよく見える位置にあり、祭壇中央には生け贄を奉る台座もありました。
When the site was first discovered, it was found buried in the jungle, and after excavation, it seems to have been cleaned and maintained. Today, iguanas are often seen coming out of the forest and sunbathing on the cobblestones of the ruins.
発見当初はジャングルの中に埋もれていたところを発見され、発掘調査後はきれいに整備されたようです。今日ではイグアナが森からでて来て、遺跡の石畳の上で日光浴をしている姿をよく見ました。
There is also a structure that can be climbed on the ruins, and the view from the top of the structure was exceptional. It used to be possible to climb the pyramids, but as the number of tourists increased, climbing was banned. The ruins near Cancun, which are accessible to Korean tourists, have already been banned due to over-tourism, and Edzná is still accessible.
また遺跡に上がれる建造物もあって、そこへ登ったところからの景色は格別でした。昔はピラミッドにも登ることが出来たようですが、観光客が増えるにつれ登ることが禁止になったようです。カンクン近くに位置し、韓国客へのアクセスがいい遺跡は既にオーバーツアリズムにより、遺跡へ登ることは禁止されていて、まだ登ることが出来るEdznáはそういった意味でも1000年前、この建造物に登りに儀式を行っていたと想像すると当時の雰囲気が目に浮かぶようでした。
