After photographing Yaki Point successfully, I also wanted to capture the sunset at the Grand Canyon. Because I was staying in Grand Canyon Village in March, I could drive to the various viewpoints along the South Rim with the local national park bus.
The last bus returned to the hotel just around sunset. I experienced the best light, usually 60 - 30 minutes before sunset when the light still illuminated the canyon, so the timing was perfect. Whenever you plan to visit, check the bus timetable. The viewpoints west of Grand Canyon Village cannot be reached by car; they can only be reached by foot or using the orange bus route.
The most photogenic views were from Hopi Point and Mohave Point. I took the photos in this article from the latter, zooming into the canyon, where the light created beautiful structures. The stormy conditions I experienced along the rim also helped. Fast-moving clouds and an incoming storm created spectacular light.
This is common in landscape photography. The harsher the weather, the higher the rewards if the light appears. An incoming storm or the end of one can give you the most dramatic light. So, if it's safe to head out, try it sometime.
