đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Je me lance avec cette sĂ©rie "STOP" dans le rĂ©cit de quelques escales. Je ne vais pas les faire dans l'ordre chronologique, juste par envie des histoires pour dĂ©poussiĂ©rer quelques vieux souvenirs.

Nous sommes ici à l'Atoll de Maratua sur l'ßle de Bornéo.

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Cela faisait quelques mois que je parcourais l’Asie des Philippines et du Nord de BornĂ©o. Je passais de mouillages en mouillages avec Ă  chaque fois un accueil trĂšs chaleureux et la rencontre d’une culture asiatique que je ne connaissais pas vraiment. Cela Ă©tait devenue ma principale raison de louvoyer. Car concernant la raison principale de mon voyage, la plongĂ©e sous-marine, j’étais dans un Ă©tat de dĂ©prime assez aigĂŒ ! J’avais beau tenter des plongĂ©es de partout oĂč je le pouvais mais Ă  chaque fois je dĂ©couvrais des fonds sous-marines dĂ©truits rĂ©cemment ou pas par la dynamite, le cyanure ou rendu invisible par l’embouchure d’un fleuve boueux et les rejets de villes toujours plus grandes

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Mais ce matin lĂ  je prĂ©sentais la proue d’Aurora devant l’Atoll de Maratua. Une info prise un peu par hasard Ă  partir d’une discussion avec un autre voyageur. Pour remettre les choses dans leur contexte, Ă  cette Ă©poque lĂ  certes Internet existait, Google earth Ă©tait encore tout jeune mais nous permettait d’avoir l’aide de vues satellites de lieux peu frĂ©quentĂ©s, mais c’est tout. Internet Ă  bord d’un bateau Ă©tait quasiment impossible, et Chatgpt donnant la description d’un lieu, le nom de tous ses habitants ainsi que la couleur de leurs cheveux et leur plats prĂ©fĂ©rĂ©s, ça n’existait pas encore ! Je disposais donc pour me prĂ©senter devant l’Atoll d’une carte marine sur laquelle ne figurait pas la position de la passe d’entrĂ©e de l’Atoll, et une une capture d’écran volĂ©e Ă  Google earth et stockĂ©e sur mon ordinateur. Grande fut ma surprise en me prĂ©sentant devant la passe et en notant la prĂ©sence d’un courant incroyablement fort. 4 Ă  5 nƓuds de courant, une vraie riviĂšre, dans un passage de 50m de large tout au plus
 Il m’a fallu attendre que l’étale pour accepter de prendre ma chance et de lancer Aurora dans le passage. Une premiĂšre pour moi, et une patience qui m’a permi de rentrer tranquillement jusqu’au Mouillage. Me voilĂ  Ă  Maratua oĂč mon voyage va reprendre sa routine « plongĂ©e » !

I therefore had before me in front of the Atoll a marine map on which the position of the entry pass to the Atoll was not indicated, and a screenshot stolen from Google Earth and stored on my computer. Great was my surprise in showing up in front of the pass and noting the presence of an incredibly strong current. 4 to 5 knots of current, a real river, in a passage 50m wide at most... I had to wait for the slack to agree to take my chance and launch Aurora into the passage. A first for me, and a patience that allowed me to quietly return to the Mouillage. Here I am in Maratua where my trip will resume its "diving" routine!

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· L’Atoll est superbe. Une piscine gĂ©ante avec un cĂŽtĂ© plat et ouvert sur un rĂ©cif, et de l’autre de hautes collines vertes. Au centre, un Ăźlot oĂč des allemands ont ouvert un hĂŽtel trĂšs bien intĂ©grĂ© et ont ouvert un centre de plongĂ©e. Aurora est Ă  1 mille nautique de l’ülot, ce qui me laisse dans une libertĂ© totale. Un village se trouve en fond de baie avec une population trĂšs discrĂšte, j’irai leur rendre assez souvent. La pĂȘche est la ressource principale de l’Atoll, le tourisme n’a pas vraiment d’impact sur la vie locale mis Ă  part pour les quelques salariĂ©s de l’hĂŽtel. Tout semble calme ici, cela faisait bien longtemps que je n’avais pas vĂ©cu ça. Peut-ĂȘtre depuis que j’étais rentrĂ© en Asie l’annĂ©e auparavant. En fait je reprends la vie que j’avais laissĂ©e en MĂ©lanĂ©sie faite de rĂ©veils matinaux, d’un bon petit dĂ©jeuner, d’un gonflage de bouteille, d’organisation de plongĂ©e, de choix de sites et d’une immersion avant 9h00 du matin. Le reste n’étant qu’écriture, repos, photographie et d’une balade de courtoisie et de rencontres en fin d’aprĂšs-midi. Ca me va comme ça !
🇬🇧 The Atoll is superb. A giant pool with a flat side open to a reef, and on the other high green hills. In the center, an island where Germans have opened a very well integrated hotel and have opened a diving center. Aurora is 1 nautical mile from the islet, which leaves me in total freedom. A village is located at the bottom of the bay with a very discreet population, I will go to them quite often. Fishing is the main resource of the Atoll, tourism does not really have an impact on local life apart from the few hotel employees. Everything seems calm here, it had been a long time since I had experienced that. Maybe since I had returned to Asia the year before. In fact, I am resuming the life I had left in Melanesia made of morning awakenings, a good breakfast, bottle inflation, organization of diving, choice of sites and immersion before 9:00 in the morning. The rest being only writing, rest, photography and a courtesy walk and meetings at the end of the afternoon. That’s fine with me!

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Je commence mes premiĂšres plongĂ©es le long du tombant Est de l’Atoll. Un long platier me sĂ©pare du tombant. J’organise mes horaires de dĂ©part et d’arrivĂ©e en fonction de la marĂ©e pour ĂȘtre certain de revenir aprĂšs ma plongĂ©e. Car les grands coefficients assĂšchent totalement le platier et me laisseraient bloquĂ© en mer si je ne fais pas attention. Il fait beau, les plongĂ©es s’enchainent, je commence Ă  cartographier le tombant, Ă  avoir mes prĂ©fĂ©rences aussi ! Beaucoup de rencontres ici. La vie rĂ©cifale est importante et trĂšs colorĂ©e. Ca me fait un bien fou. Beaucoup de poissons de roches, beaucoup d’éponges bariques et de coraux volumineux. Rien Ă  dire le rĂ©cif est en bonne santĂ©. Quelques gros font parfois leur apparition. J’y surprend un requin lĂ©opard et quelques gros pĂ©lagiques. Le soir, je rejoins le village ou l’hotel, pour quelques discussions de plongĂ©e et quelques rencontres. Mais je ne suis pas au bout de mes surprises, les conversations avec les uns et les autres vont me mener vers deux autres plongĂ©es exceptionnelles...

🇬🇧 I start my first dives along the eastern edge of the Atoll. A long reef separates me from the edge. I organize my departure and arrival times according to the tide to be sure to return after my dive. Because the large coefficients completely dry out the reef and would leave me stuck at sea if I’m not careful. The weather is nice, the dives keep coming, I start to map the drop-off, to have my preferences too! Many encounters here. The reef life is important and very colorful. It makes me feel great. Many rock fish, many baric sponges and voluminous corals. Nothing to say the reef is in good health. A few big ones sometimes appear. I catch a leopard shark and some big pelagics. In the evening, I join the village or the hotel for some diving discussions and some meetings. But I am not at the end of my surprises, the conversations with each other will lead me to two other exceptional dives...
