L'Isle Sur La Sorgue - Venice In French Provence

L’Isle sur la Sorgue is a version of Venice in French. We included this lovely picturesque town, whose view is somewhat different from the standard view of the cities in this corner of France in our trip program to Provence. It is a town with silence and idyll, with a unique Provençal charm and a surprisingly relaxing environment that beats the brutal local heat.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue is located 25 km east of Avignon. The thermometer above the entrance to the local pharmacy showed +40, and the town was flooded with tourists. Therefore, we had to take several “laps of honor” to park the car.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue has no outstanding history. But the territory it occupies is quite interesting. Indeed, the river seems to embrace the city with its channels. 

At first, L’Isle sur la Sorgue was an ordinary fishing village, and in the 18th century it turned into an industrial town producing silk and paper. Since water was required for industrial needs, L’Isle sur la Sorgue was cut by numerous canals. Long and short ones. This is how "Venice" appeared on the map of Provence.

As a reminder of those times, fourteen ancient water wheels remain, which were used as a drive for factory equipment and supplying water to houses.  These waterwheels, some covered with thick green-brown moss, are one of the tourist brands of L'Isle sur la Sorgue. Looking at a wheel like this and not knowing how old it is, you think that it was installed somewhere in the first or second century after Christ. Or even BC. Or maybe it was not established, but created by nature itself.

People go to this city for a pleasant pastime. For contemplation and relaxation. For leisurely walks along the embankments and narrow streets. For relaxation in cafes and restaurants with beautiful views of the canals. There are no priceless architectural monuments (the only interesting object is the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame des Anges), no museums with extraordinary collections, no parks with statues and fountains, but the town is unusually pleasant. This green surface of water, wheels and bridges instantly sink into the soul.

But this town is famous for more than just its stunning views. You will find numerous antique shops there. They have generated a popularity outside this region and were a source of curiosity for antique hunters, both professional and amateur. Fortunately, we were in L’Isle sur la Sorgue, not on an antique or market day, and therefore, we could calmly explore the city - without the presence of the additional public.

Walking around L’Isle sur la Sorgue, I didn’t think about the time or about forty degrees on the thermometer. On almost every street there were some surprises. I have never come across such a stunning store design. In France, I've seen a lot of stunning decorative signs, interesting storefronts and retail spaces, but this wild, crazy creativity gave us an unforgettable effect.

The walls of some houses in L'Isle sur la Sorgue are decorated with frescoes. The architecture of the ancient residential buildings located on the streets of this city is typical of the vast majority of Provence cities: boxes of light colors with smooth, simple facades, blind shutters and tiled roofs with a slight slope.  Until the heat subsides, the shutters have to be kept closed.

Since my husband and I had not yet gotten used to the local hot climate, we categorically did not want to have lunch, even though it was already four o’clock. Also, not to take some hot dishes. The only thing my body so insistently demanded was more ice cream. And we, sitting down in one of the cafe, opposite the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame des Anges, ordered ourselves an excellent dessert with raspberries and fruit.

This church began to be built in the 40s of the 17th century and completed this process in the 18th century. Frankly speaking, we did not expect to see either beautiful or rich interior decoration here, since in the guidebooks, at best, only the name of the church was mentioned. However, its interior turned out to be a pleasant discovery for us.

Shining from solid gilding, with wonderful woodwork: figures, twisted columns, ornaments - and this, as it turned out, was all done in the 17th century. In the center is a painting with a scene of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

The altar, made of Carrara marble, and the figures of angels decorating it also date back to the same era. Ordinary, but wonderfully coordinated flowers and herbs in front of a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child. You cannot deny an excellent taste for the Provencals. But the reasons for surprise were not yet exhausted. Above the arches leading to the chapels, “sat” the figures of charming ladies, representing allegories of various virtues inherent in the Virgin Mary: faith, chastity, peacefulness and moderation, mercy and hope, etc. And the columns were decorated with beautiful paintings.   

Finally, I will say that L’Isle sur la Sorgue is not the only city in Provence that is a little reminiscent of Venice. Not far from it is the Fontaine de Vaucluse, also located on the water. But if you don’t have enough time, then I think it’s better to give preference to it for its picturesqueness.

When visiting Provence, it is absolutely impossible not to visit this town, because it is here that you can see the real Provence, the same one that inspired the work of the great French impressionists, see exactly the landscapes that are found on their canvases, breathing with heat and the spicy aromas of lavender and Provencal herbs. This is a completely different Provence, not the pretentious Provence that is on the Cote d'Azur; on the contrary, it is cozy and a little provincial, where everyone, or almost everyone, knows each other.
