gleich früh am nächsten Morgen folgte der nächste tierische Schock. In der Diele lag eine tote Kakerlake auf dem Rücken. Ein wirklich riesiges Teil. Als ich sie im Müll in der Garage entsorgen wollte traf ich auf 3 weitere, die die beine in die Luft streckten. Das war jetzt für mich kein großes Problem aber meine Frau war nicht amüsiert über die Tatsache. Ich erinnerte mich, dass im Hausordner etwas über Kakerlaken stand und schaute nochmals nach. Kakerlaken sind in Florida ganz normal und dagegen gibt es die Pest Control. Das Mittel wird rund ums Haus versprüht und die Kakerlaken sterben nach ein paar Metern, wenn sie darüber gelaufen sind. Man solle sich nur melden, wenn man lebende Kakerlaken im haus sehen würde. Soweit so gut aber meine Frau war trotzdem nicht gerade erfreut.

Dann ging es für uns nach einem leckeren Frühstück mit Nutella-Erdnussbutter Toast zur Ablenkung auf nach Sanibel Island. Sanibel Island ist eine wunderschöne und einzigartige Barriereinsel vor der Küste, in der Nähe von Fort Myers und Cape Coral. Sie ist bekannt für ihre unberührten, mit Muscheln übersäten Strände, ihre reiche Tierwelt und ihre entspannte, naturnahe Atmosphäre. Die Strände von Sanibel sind naturbelassen und bieten kilometerlangen, feinen Sand zum Spazierengehen, Sonnenbaden und Entspannen. Beliebte Strände sind Bowman's Beach (oft als einer der schönsten Floridas bezeichnet), Lighthouse Beach (am östlichen Ende mit dem historischen Leuchtturm), Blind Pass Beach (bekannt für seine Gezeitenpools und Vogelbeobachtung) und Turner Beach. Und genau an dieser Bowmans Beach war unser Ziel.

Nach ca. 45 Minuten Fahrt kamen wir an und liefen vom Parkplatz zum Strand. Schon auf dem Weg konnten wir die vielfältigen Vogelarten der Insel bestaunen. Auf Sanibel Island gibt es auch das J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge: Ein riesiges Schutzgebiet, das über die Hälfte der Insel umfasst. Es ist ein Paradies für Vogelbeobachter und beherbergt eine beeindruckende Vielfalt an Watvögeln, Reihern, Ibissen, Löfflern und vielen anderen Arten. Als sich die Vegetation lichtete kamen wir auf den wunderschönen Strand und suchten uns ein Fleckchen für unsere Sachen. Und dann machten wir uns direkt zu einem ausgedehnten Strandspaziergang auf.

Sanibel ist weltberühmt für seine unglaubliche Vielfalt an Muscheln. Die besondere geographische Lage der Insel und die sanften Strömungen des Golfs von Mexiko spülen täglich unzählige Muscheln an die Strände. "The Sanibel Stoop" ist ein bekannter Begriff für die nach vorne gebeugte Haltung von Muschelsuchern. Und so ging es uns dann auch. ich habe noch nie so viele Muscheln an einem Strand gesehen wie hier und wir konnten den blick nicht vom Boden nehmen. Dabei wären uns fast die Delfine entgangen, die dicht vor dem Strand parallel dazu schwammen und immer wieder auftauchten.

Natürlich warfen wir uns über den Tag verteilt auch immer wieder ins kühle Naß des wunderschön blauen Meeres und sonnten uns beim Lesen auf dem Handtuch. Als wir am späten nachmittag dann zur Rückfahrt aufbrachen, wollten wir eigentlich gar nicht gehen. Wieder zurück in unserem Haus konnten wir alsdann unsere Muschelfunde vom Tag begutachten und die schönsten für die Rückreise nach Deutschland gut einpacken.

The next morning, another animal shock followed. A dead cockroach was lying on its back in the hallway. A truly huge thing. As I went to throw it in the trash in the garage, I encountered three more, their legs in the air. This wasn't a big problem for me, but my wife wasn't amused by the fact. I remembered that the house folder said something about cockroaches and looked it up again. Cockroaches are quite common in Florida, and there's Pest Control for that. The spray is sprayed around the house, and the cockroaches die after walking over them a few meters. People are only supposed to report if they see live cockroaches in the house. So far, so good, but my wife still wasn't exactly happy.

Then, after a delicious breakfast of Nutella and peanut butter toast, we headed to Sanibel Island for a distraction. Sanibel Island is a beautiful and unique barrier island off the coast, near Fort Myers and Cape Coral. It is known for its pristine, shell-strewn beaches, its abundant wildlife, and its relaxed, nature-loving atmosphere. Sanibel's beaches are pristine and offer miles of powdery sand for walking, sunbathing, and relaxing. Popular beaches include Bowman's Beach (often cited as one of Florida's most beautiful), Lighthouse Beach (at the eastern end with the historic lighthouse), Blind Pass Beach (known for its tide pools and birdwatching), and Turner Beach. Bowman's Beach was our destination.

After about a 45-minute drive, we arrived and walked from the parking lot to the beach. Even along the way, we marveled at the island's diverse bird species. Sanibel Island is also home to the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge: a vast protected area that covers over half of the island. It's a paradise for birdwatchers and home to an impressive variety of wading birds, herons, ibises, spoonbills, and many other species. As the vegetation thinned, we came to the beautiful beach and found a spot to set down our things. Then we went straight for a long walk.

Sanibel is world-famous for its incredible variety of shells. The island's unique geographical location and the gentle currents of the Gulf of Mexico wash countless shells onto the beaches every day. "The Sanibel Stoop" is a well-known term for the forward-leaning posture of shell seekers. And that's exactly what happened to us. I've never seen so many shells on one beach as here, and we couldn't take our eyes off the ground. We almost missed the dolphins swimming parallel to the beach, surfacing every now and then.

Of course, throughout the day, we also dived into the cool waters of the beautiful blue sea and sunbathed on our towels while reading. When we set off for the return journey late in the afternoon, we didn't really want to leave. Back at our house, we were able to examine our shell finds from the day and pack the most beautiful ones for the return trip to Germany.
