kürzlich konnte ich das Geschenk meiner Frau zu meinem Geburtstag einlösen, ein Besuch bei einem American Football Spiel. Nämlich bei der Frankfurt Galaxy.

Die Frankfurt Galaxy, einst ein stolzes Aushängeschild des American Footballs in Europa, blickt auf eine ereignisreiche Geschichte zurück. Von ihren Anfängen in der World League of American Football (WLAF) bis hin zur heutigen Zeit in der European League of Football (ELF) haben die Galaxy Fans und Gegner gleichermaßen mit ihrem Spiel begeistert. Dort wollte ich schon immer einmal dabei sein. Bereits in den 90er Jahren als die Frankfurt Galaxy als eines von zehn Gründungsmitgliedern der WLAF an den Start ging. Die Liga, die als Gegenstück zur US-amerikanischen National Football League (NFL) fungierte, brachte American Football nach Europa und begeisterte Fans mit hochkarätigem Spiel und internationalen Stars. Die Galaxy war damals eines der Top Teams und konnte mehrmals die Meisterschaft gewinnen. Nach dem Ende der WLAF im Jahr 2001 wechselte die Galaxy in die neu gegründete NFL Europe (NFLE). Die Liga, die aus Teams aus Deutschland, England, Frankreich, den Niederlanden und Österreich bestand, bot weiterhin hochklassiges American Football und erfreute sich großer Beliebtheit. Auch hier konnte sich die Galaxy mehrmals den Titel sichern.

Doch auch hierfür war die zeit damals noch nicht reif und American Football einfach zu unbekannt in Deutschland. Doch dann kam RAN Football und mit der Sendung auf Sat 1 über die Jahre immer mehr Fans zum Football. Tom Brady und Patrick Mahomes taten ihr übriges und plötzlich war Football in Deutschland hip. Im Jahr 2021 erlebte die Frankfurt Galaxy dann ihre Wiedergeburt. Mit der Gründung der European League of Football (ELF) kehrte American Football auf die große Bühne Europas zurück. Die Galaxy, die als eines der acht Gründungsmitglieder der ELF antrat, konnte sich gleich in der ersten Saison den Titel sichern und besiegte im Championship Game die Hamburg Sea Devils.

Und genau die Wiederauflage dieses Finales im normalen Ligaspiel durfte ich miterleben. Das Spiel wurde auch auf Pro7maxx übertragen und direkt vor meinen Top Platz in der 2ten Reihe standen die Reporter und führten Interviews. Was soll ich sagen, ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Schon der Einlauf der teams war spektakulär mit Musik und Feuerwerk. Auch die deutsche und amerikanische Nationalhymne waren sehr bewegend von einem Chor vorgetragen. Abgerundet wurde das ganze von einer tollen Marching Band und wirklich fantastischen Cheerleadern, die das ganze Spiel über Stimmung machten.

Im Spiel ging es richtig zur Sache und es wurde wirklich alles gezeigt. Von Interception über Fumble, Salto zum Touchdown, Field Goal bis hin zur Two Point Conversion, alles dabei! Die galaxy legte los wie die Feuerwehr und hatte irgendwann einen Vorsprung von 24 zu 3. Doch im letzten Viertel wollten es die Sea Devils aus hamburg noch einmal wissen und kamen durch 2 Touchdowns und eine Two Point Conversion auf 24 zu 18 heran. Mit einem weitern Touchdown hätten sie das Spiel noch gewinnen können, doch die Galaxy blieb ruhig und gab in den letzten beiden Spielminuten den Ballbesitz nicht mehr ab, so dass der Sieg am Ende fest stand.

Ein phänomenales Erlebnis für mich, für das ich meiner Frau auf ewig dankbar sein werde.

I was recently able to redeem my wife's birthday present, a visit to an American football game. Namely, to the Frankfurt Galaxy.

The Frankfurt Galaxy, once a proud flagship of American football in Europe, looks back on an eventful history. From its beginnings in the World League of American Football (WLAF) to today's European League of Football (ELF), the Galaxy have thrilled fans and opponents alike with their game. I've always wanted to be there. Back in the 90s, when the Frankfurt Galaxy started out as one of ten founding members of the WLAF. The league, which served as a counterpart to the US National Football League (NFL), brought American football to Europe and thrilled fans with top-class play and international stars. The Galaxy was one of the top teams at the time and won the championship several times. After the end of the WLAF in 2001, the Galaxy moved to the newly founded NFL Europe (NFLE). The league, which consisted of teams from Germany, England, France, the Netherlands and Austria, continued to offer high-class American football and enjoyed great popularity. Here, too, the Galaxy was able to secure the title several times.

But the time was not yet ripe for this, and American football was simply too unknown in Germany. But then RAN Football came along and with the broadcast on Sat 1, more and more fans got into football over the years. Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes did the rest and suddenly football was hip in Germany. In 2021, the Frankfurt Galaxy experienced its rebirth. With the founding of the European League of Football (ELF), American football returned to the big stage in Europe. The Galaxy, which competed as one of the eight founding members of the ELF, was able to secure the title in its first season and defeated the Hamburg Sea Devils in the championship game.

And I was able to experience exactly the re-run of this final in the normal league game. The game was also broadcast on Pro7maxx and the reporters stood right in front of my top seat in the second row and conducted interviews. What can I say, I was not disappointed. The teams' entrance was spectacular with music and fireworks. The German and American national anthems were also performed very movingly by a choir. The whole thing was rounded off by a great marching band and really fantastic cheerleaders who created a great atmosphere throughout the game.

The game was really intense and everything was shown. From interceptions to fumbles, somersaults to touchdowns, field goals and two-point conversions, everything was there! The Galaxy got off to a flying start and at one point had a lead of 24 to 3. But in the last quarter the Sea Devils from Hamburg wanted to give it another go and got to 24 to 18 with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. They could have won the game with another touchdown, but the Galaxy stayed calm and didn't give up possession of the ball in the last two minutes of the game, so that the victory was secured in the end.

A phenomenal experience for me, for which I will be eternally grateful to my wife.
