At my last visit, I walked through the streets and alleys of Ponta Delgada.
There, where every tourist walks for a while.
Along the harbour promenade, some paths up and down, over small squares and through parks...until my feet finally needed a break.
The Azores have a beautiful architecture. I like this style very much, also each house is different in colour, although the style often remains the same. Only a few modern buildings stand out. The difference is immediately recognizable, you can really see the Historical background of the buildings.
about Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is the capital of the Azores. The Azores belong to Portugal. Directly at the harbour are the city gate "Portas da Cidade", through which I walked, as well as the church of Saint São Sebastião, about which I had already written an article before. In the museum "Carlos Machado" one gets good insights into the historical past of the Azores, as well as the culture there is good mediated. The capital is more and more visited by tourism, which offers not only advantages in my eyes, but this is another topic.
If you translates the name "Ponta Delgada", this means something like "narrow point". I always find it interesting what names actually really mean.
There are three municipalities, which together have approx. 17,800 inhabitants.
Altogether there are about 68,748 inhabitants on the Azores and that with an island surface of 232.99 km².
In 1499 the capital Ponta Delgada was founded by the Portuguese king Manuel I. At the beginning this small town was a fishermen settlement, which was in the today's district Calheta. You can easily recognizes the city growth since that time. A small headland which lay before Calheta gave its name to the capital of today.
But now enough background and history, just have a look at my street pictures. I think visual impressions say at least as much as written words.

na estrada na capital
Na minha última visita, andei pelas ruas e vielas de Ponta Delgada.
Lá, onde cada turista caminha um pouco.
Ao longo da promenade do porto, alguns caminhos para cima e para baixo, sobre pequenas praças e através de parques... até que os meus pés finalmente precisaram de uma pausa.
Os Açores têm uma bela arquitectura. Gosto muito deste estilo, também cada casa tem uma cor diferente, embora o estilo seja sempre o mesmo. Apenas alguns edifícios modernos se destacam. A diferença é imediatamente reconhecível, pode realmente ver-se o fundo histórico dos edifícios.
Sobre Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada é a capital dos Açores. Os Açores pertencem a Portugal. Directamente no porto estão as Portas da Cidade, por onde passei, e a igreja de São Sebastião, sobre a qual já tinha escrito um artigo. No museu "Carlos Machado" temos uma boa visão do passado histórico dos Açores, assim como da cultura que lá é bem mediada. A capital é cada vez mais visitada pelo turismo, que oferece não só vantagens aos meus olhos, mas é outro tema.
Se traduzirmos o nome "Ponta Delgada", isto significa algo como "ponto estreito". Acho sempre interessante o que os nomes realmente significam.
Há três municípios, que juntos têm cerca de 17.800 habitantes.
No total, existem cerca de 68.748 habitantes nos Açores e isso com uma superfície de 232,99 km².
Em 1499, a capital Ponta Delgada foi fundada pelo rei português D. Manuel I. No início, esta pequena cidade era um povoado de pescadores, que se situava no actual distrito da Calheta. É fácil reconhecer o crescimento da cidade desde então. Um pequeno promontório que ficava antes de a Calheta dar o seu nome à capital de hoje.
Mas agora já chega de história e história, basta ver as minhas fotografias de rua. Acho que as impressões visuais dizem pelo menos tanto quanto as palavras escritas.

in der Hauptstadt unterwegs
Bei meinem letzten Besuch, binich durch die Strassen und Gassen von Ponta Delgada gelaufen.
Dort, wo jeder Tourist mal lang läuft.
Die Hafenpromenade entlang, einige Wege hoch und runter, über kleine Plätze und durch Parks hindurch...bis meine Füße schließlich eine Pause brauchten.
Die Azoren haben eine wunderschöne Architektur. Ich bewundere diesen Stil sehr, ebenso ist jedes Haus farblich anders, obgleich der Stil oft gleich bleibt. Nur wenige modernere Bauten heben sich ab. Der unterschied ist sofort erkennbar, man sieht dem Gebäude wahrhaft die Zeit an.

Ponta Delgada ist die Hauptstadt der Azoren. Die Azore zählen noch zu Portugal. Direkt am Hafen befinden sich sowohl das Stadttor “Portas da Cidade“, durch das ich durchgelaufen bin, sowie die Kirche des Heiligen São Sebastião, über die ich zuvor schon einen Artikel geschrieben hatte. Im Museum “Carlos Machado“ erhascht man gute Einblicke in die geschichtliche Vergangenheit der Azoren, sowie die Kultur dort gut vermittelt wird. Die Hauptstadt wird immer mehr vom Tourismus heimgesucht, was nicht nur Vorteile bietet. Übersetzt man sich den Namen “Ponta Delgada“ einmal, bedeutet dieses soviel wie “schmale Spitze“. Ich finde es stets interessant, was Namen eigentlich bedeuten.
Es soll drei Stadtgemeinden geben, welche zusammen ca. 17.800 Einwohner haben.
Insgesamt gibt es etwa 68.748 Einwohner auf den Azoren und das bei einer Inselfläche von 232,99 km² .
1499 wurde die Hauptstadt Ponta Delgada von dem portugiesischen König Manuel I. gegründet. Zu Beginn war dieses Städtchen eine Fischersiedlung, welche sich im heutigen Ortsteil Calheta befand. Man erkennt stark den Wachstum seit dieser Zeit. Eine kleine Landspitze welche vor Calheta lag gab der heutigen Hauptstadt überhaupt erst ihren Namen.
Doch nun genug erzählt, schaut euch einfach meine Strassen Aufnahmen an. Ich denke visuelle Eindrücke sagen mindestens genausoviel wie geschriebene Worte.
