The mandarin duck the world's most beautiful and the most colorful duck is a native of China and Japan. Their plumage is combination of white, black, grey, creamy, orange and green colors. Beak is red with white tip. It is medium-sized, at 41–49 cm long with a 65–75 cm wingspan. Males can be easily distinguished from females because they are more brightly colored. Both the males and females have crests, but the purple crest is common in male.
In Pakistan we can only see Mandarin duck in some parks. I saw this bird in lake view Bird Park, Islamabad. I fell in love with this beautiful bird and I started to visit this bird's park quite often. This bird is not shy and swims in lake very closely.
Mandarin duck mostly lives in small ponds and avoids lakes. They frequently perch on trees. Female chooses a hole or cavity in a tree trunk to lay her eggs. Mandarin duck spends a lot of time in the water. Mandarin duck is active during the day, mostly in the early morning and late afternoon hours.
