Hello friends! Almost every Sunday we go to the local market and this Sunday it’s being held in the town of Vilassar de Mar. This market has all kinds of products: you can buy vegetables, fruits, flowers, sweets and bakery items. Since it's currently winter orange season is at its peak and we're here for oranges, mandarins and other citrus fruits.
I wanted to share with you the atmosphere of the market, what kind of fruits and vegetables are sold and how much they cost. For example, enormous tomatoes are 4.80 euros per kilo and beautiful oranges are 99 cents. There’s a small bar in the market and a seating area where you can sit down and have breakfast. You can also buy bottled or bulk wine and vermouth here.
We went to the place where we bought more oranges. If I talk about seasonal produce, artichokes and onions are abundant this time of year. Artichokes are 3.95 euros per kilo and onions are 4.50 euros. Here’s an interesting detail: live snails are also sold here. Snails are quite a popular delicacy in Catalonia and are usually found in restaurants. Personally, I think preparing them at home could be risky. It’s better to try them in a restaurant setting.
The colorful cauliflowers are eye-catching, priced at 2 euros each. The first plums and raspberries have started appearing as well. Strawberries have even begun their season, but they’re a bit expensive at 10 euros. Oranges are 89 cents and we plan to buy about 2 kilos of them.
After the market, we took a little trip. We took the train to the town of Sant Pol. Along the R1 line, you can enjoy views of the sea, assuming the windows aren’t covered in graffiti. The town is very peaceful, though it fills up with tourists during the summer months. There are tourist apartments here, but they’re empty in February.
We found the only open restaurant by the seaside for lunch. In Spanish restaurants lunch service usually continues until around 4 pm, after which they close. After our meal, we took a short walk around the town.
On the way back home, I’m feeling a bit sick, maybe I caught a cold. Hugs to you all, see you in the next posts! Take care!
