More Epic than Netflix: Visit Vianden Castle, Luxembourg

This tiny town in northern Luxembourg feels like it was custom-built for your daydreams. Think: colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and a sleepy little river wrapping the town in quiet charm. Grab a cappuccino by the River Our, take in the vibe, and pretend you are in the opening scene of a film because it kind of feels like that.

And just when you think it could not get more cinematic, hop onto the only chairlift in Luxembourg. It takes you all the way up the hill where the views are next-level: dramatic hills, forested valleys, and a full panorama of the one and only Vianden Castle.

Luxembourg may be small, in fact, it is actually smaller than the London metropolitan area, but it proudly guards over 50 castles. And Vianden Castle? That is the crown jewel. In fact, that it appeared in a CNN article as one of 21 of Europe's most beautiful castles. How cool is that?

A Castle With Cinematic Past and Medieval History 

Vianden Castle has drama written into its walls. It started off as a Roman fortification, evolved into a medieval palace for the Counts of Vianden, and after centuries of fire, earthquakes, and noble neglect, it collapsed into ruins. But in a true fairytale twist, the Luxembourg state fully restored it after 1977, and by the 1990s, it was reopened to the public in all its glory.

Want a fun twist? Vianden Castle has been a film star, too. It has appeared on screen in the cult vampire movie "Shadow of the Vampire" starring John Malkovich, the classic mystery "Sherlock Holmes and the Leading Lady" with Christopher Lee, and the fantasy adventure "George and the Dragon" with none other than Patrick Swayze.

If you are less into vampires but more into romance, think Victor Hugo. The legendary French writer visited Vianden several times in the 19th century and was clearly charmed by its atmosphere. His former residence in town is now a lovely museum, perfect for a quiet cultural detour.
