Happy weekend, my dear Worldmappin friends! When I visited Rome last year, I had many places marked on my list to visit. As I've mentioned before, many of them were best planned well in advance, but like any tourist, I also let myself be surprised by what I stumbled upon around every corner, and that's what today's post is about. Walking through Campo Marzio in the city center, I suddenly came across this imposing Catholic church, and as with all the others, I ventured inside. It's the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, a beautiful Baroque temple whose facade and interiors reflect the model of the Church of the Gesù.

¡Feliz fin de semana mis queridos amigos de Worldmappin!. Cuando visité Roma el año pasado tenía muchos lugares marcados para visitar. Como he dicho antes, muchos de ellos era mejor tenerlos planificados con mucha antelación, pero como cualquier turista, también me dejé impresionar con lo que me encontraba a la vuelta de la esquina, y de eso se trata el post de hoy. Caminando por Campo Marzio en el centro de la ciudad, me encontré de pronto con esta imponente iglesia católica, y como con todas las demás me atreví a entrar. Se trata de la Iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola, un hermoso templo barroco que en su fachada e interiores resalta el modelo de la Iglesia de Gesù.

From the moment you enter, you realize how special this place is. You can admire sculptures of angels in every corner, as well as various paintings paying homage to saints and popes of the past among the chapels located on the right and left. As you can see in the first photographs, people are lining up to enter this church, and it's one of many that has something special and unique to offer. The entire ceiling is covered by the magnificent work, The Glory of Saint Ignatius, by the Jesuit artist Andrea Pozzo. This grand fresco has the peculiar effect of giving the impression that you are looking up at a very tall temple that reaches into the heavens, since it was painted from below. What's impressive about this illusion is that the artwork is on a ceiling that is completely flat. I'll leave some photos I took of the ceiling below, but I'll also include a professional image I found on Wikipedia so you can appreciate it better...

Desde que entras al lugar te das cuenta de lo especial que es. Puedes apreciar esculturas de ángeles en cada rincón, además de diversas pinturas en homenaje a santos y papas del pasado entre las capillas que se encuentran a la derecha o la izquierda. Como pueden ver en las primeras fotografías, las personas hacen cola para entrar a esta iglesia, y es que es una de muchas que tiene algo especial y distinto para ofrecer. Todo el techo está pintado por la gran obra La Gloria de San Ignacio, del artista jesuita Andrea Pozzo. Este gran fresco tiene la peculiaridad de dar la impresión de que estás viendo dibujado sobre ti un templo muy alto que culmina en el cielo, ya que fue pintado desde abajo, pero lo impresionante de esta ilusión es que la obra está sobre un techo que es totalmente plano. Les dejaré aquí abajo algunas fotos que tomé del techo, pero voy adicionar una imagen profesional completa que encontré en Wikipedia para que puedan apreciarla mejor...
Like good tourists, we tried to take selfies with the church ceiling as a backdrop, but wow, it was complicated! That's why, even though entry to this church is free, people form a long line inside to take a picture with a large mirror in the middle of the aisle, reflecting the ceiling above. To save time and money, we preferred to do it the easy way, as we say in Venezuela. The bad thing is that none of the photos turned out well, but we do have the memory of that adventure among the four of us trying to take selfies. Before the altar, you can see a very dark dome, but it turns out that there's actually no dome at all; it's another painting on a flat surface. I couldn't believe how many visual effects you can find in this church in Rome—simply impressive...
Como buenos turistas intentamos tomarnos selfies con el techo de la iglesia como fondo, pero vaya que fue complicado; motivo por el cual, aunque se puede entrar gratis a esta iglesia, las personas hacen una larga cola dentro de ella para tomarse una fotografía con un gran espejo que hay en todo el centro del pasilla viendo hacia arriba. Para ahorrar tiempo y euros, preferimos hacerlo a lo caimán, como decimos en Venezuela 🤣 lo malo es que no quedó ninguna foto buena, pero sí el recuerdo de esa aventura entre nosotros cuatro con los selfies. Antes del altar se puede ver una cúpula muy oscura, y resulta que en realidad no existe tal cúpula, es otra pintura sobre una superficie plana. Yo no podía creer tantos efectos visuales se pueden encontrar en esta iglesia en Roma, simplemente impresionante...

Don't get me wrong, it only costs one euro to use the mirror, but there was a long line to take that photo with the optical illusion. Maybe on a second visit, with more time, we could do everything at a more relaxed pace, but that day we had a concert in the evening and still had a lot to see. In fact, from there we went to the Pantheon in Rome, which was very close by. If you're going to visit Rome and want to see as many Catholic churches as possible, the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in Campo Marzio is a must-see, as it has many features that make it stand out among so many others. No me entiendan mal, en realidad para usar el espejo solo es un euro, pero sí había mucha cola para poder tomarse esa foto con el efecto óptico, quizás en una segunda visita con más tiempo se pueda hacer todo con calma, pero ese día teníamos concierto en la noche y faltaba mucho por recorrer, de hecho, de aquí fuimos al Panteón de Roma que estaba muy cerca. Si vas a visitar Roma y quieres conocer la mayor cantidad de templos católicos, la Iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola en Campo Martio es una parada obligatoria, ya que tiene muchas características que las hacen resaltar entre tantas.
