Pontifical Lateran University and the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary, Italy

Happy start to the week, everyone! Today I want to travel back to Rome and share my trip to the Pontifical Roman Seminary (Seminario Romano Maggiore). This is where future priests are trained in Rome, and it's located at Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano 4, next to the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, which is the Pope's cathedral as Bishop of Rome. It's an important place for the Catholic Church, and it gave me a more complete experience than just visiting the Vatican, its museums, and the major cathedrals. In this post, you'll see some pictures of the exterior and the Aula Magna Benedicto XVI.

¡Feliz inicio de semana para todos!. Hoy quiero viajar nuevamente a Roma compartiéndoles mi viaje hasta el Pontificio Seminario Romano Maggiore. En este lugar se forman los futuros sacerdotes en esa ciudad, y está ubicado en la Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano 4, junto a la Archibasílica de San Juan de Letrán, que viene siendo la catedral del Papa como Obispo de Roma, así que es un lugar importante para la religión católica, que me hizo vivir una experiencia más completa de lo que fue visitar el Vaticano, sus museos y las catedrales mayores. En este post verán algunas imágenes de los exteriores y el Aula Magna Benedetto XVI.

As a curiosity to other places I visited on my trip to Rome, the Pontifical Major Seminary isn't something you can easily access whenever you want, as it's a student residence. So, it was a real privilege to be there. Although we didn't see everything, we were able to see a bit more than the average person walking through the city. In fact, I know they occasionally offer free guided tours, but they focus more on showcasing the main chapel. I attended with my musical group, as the choir was having its first official performance in Rome in the Aula Magna Benedetto XVI. We were delighted to meet many Venezuelans from the Church, the press, and other relevant institutions, as we were on the eve of the historic event of the canonization of the first two Venezuelan saints.

A diferencia de otros lugares que conocí en mi viaje a Roma, el Pontificio Seminario Mayor no es lugar al que puedas acceder con facilidad el día que quieras, ya que es la residencia de los estudiantes, así que fue todo un privilegio estar en estas instalaciones, que aunque tampoco recorrimos completo, pudimos ver un poco más que el ciudadano común que transita por la ciudad, de hecho, sí sé que eventualmente ofrecen visitas guiadas gratuitas, pero se enfocan más en dar a conocer la capilla principal. Yo asistí con mi institución musical, ya que la coral tenía nuestra primera presentación oficial en Roma en el Aula Magna Benedetto XVI, y felizmente nos encontramos con muchísimos venezolanos de la iglesia, la prensa y otras instituciones de interés, ya que estábamos en la antesala del evento histórico de la canonización de los dos primeros santos venezolanos.

The Aula Magna Benedetto XVI is a very important auditorium shared by the Pontifical Seminary and its neighbor, the Pontifical Lateran University. It bears the name of this Pope, as he was the one who restored it during his religious service. Before entering, there's nothing particularly remarkable to see other than a bust dedicated to Benedict XVI, but upon arrival, you discover the sheer size of the auditorium and the main artwork displayed at its center. The work is called Gesù Maestro, a large mosaic created in 1937 by the Vatican Mosaic Studio. What I love most about this work are the twelve lambs that accompany Jesus in the center beneath the rainbow, which symbolizes the Divine Covenant, while they themselves represent the twelve apostles.

Aula Magna Benedetto XVI:

El Aula Magna Benedetto XVI es un auditorio muy importante que comparte el Seminario Pontificio junto a su vecina, Pontificia Universidad Lateranense, y lleva el nombre de este Papa, ya que fue él quien la restauró en su servicio religioso en su momento. Antes de entrar no se observa nada realmente especial más que un busto dedicado a Benedicto XVI, pero al llegar descubres la magnitud del auditorio y el arte principal que se aprecia en todo el centro del escenario. La obra se llama Gesù Maestro, un gran mosaico confeccionado en 1937 por el Estudio del Mosaico Vaticano; lo que más amo de este trabajo son esos doce corderos que acompañan a Jesús en el centro bajo el arcoíris que simboliza la Alianza Divina, mientras ellos simbolizan a los 12 apóstoles.

Aula Magna Benedicto XVI:

I remember that the event in the Aula Magna was incredibly long, especially since our musical performance was scheduled for the very end, coming after another choir that was singing a different type of repertoire. I did get bored at times, just counting the hours until I could get back out to the courtyard to keep exploring every nook and cranny and see where else I could sneak into within these educational institutions 🤣. It wasn't easy, though; out of respect, I decided not to take advantage of the trust placed in us as a group. The upside was that by the time it ended, it was already night; I love seeing places I know well at both day and night because they always look different. I walked ahead to admire the obelisk and take photos of the surrounding area—the plaza in front of the Pontifical Lateran University is open to the public and is just as beautiful as any other square in Rome. It’s one of the simpler ones, yet it feels more special than many others I’ve visited around the world. Rome is amazing in every single corner ❤️

Recuerdo que este evento en el Aula Magna fue muy, muy largo, además de que nuestro número musical sería al final, incluso después de otro coro que cantaría otro tipo de repertorio antes que nosotros, así que sí llegué a aburrirme aquí, y solo contaba las horas para volver al patio y seguir indagando por cada rincón y ver a cuantos lugares más podría colarme en estas instituciones educativas 🤣 pero no fue nada fácil, e incluso por respeto decidí no abusar de la confianza que nos dieron como agrupación. Lo bueno es que al final ya era de noche, y me encanta ver los mismos lugares que conozco tanto de día como de noche, porque siempre lucen distintos. Me adelanté para apreciar el obelisco y tomarle fotografías al resto de la zona, ya que la plaza frente a la Pontificia Universidad Lateranense es de libre acceso y es tan hermosa como cualquier otra plaza de Roma, siendo esta una de las más simples, y aún así, más especial que muchas otras que he conocido en el mundo. Roma es asombrosa en cada rincón ❤️
