Thinking about Athens, Greece to live, for 30 - 90 days.
Hey Friends,
Athens, Greece is for history buffs. If you love the idea of studying human civilization and the rise of cultures, Athens is the perfect place for you. The Acropolis is breathtaking and there are so many historical artifacts to discover. If you don't want to waste your time with all the historical sites, take a leisurely walk along the beach and enjoy the weather. No matter what you choose to do, you will find enjoyment in Athens. That is what they say, so let's see if it is true.
Why Athens, Greece?
Good Question... Well, I had a ticket back to Vietnam on the 14th of this month. But it would seem Visa issues, and the coming TET holiday put a kibosh on that plan. So I find myself at my parents home in CT, USA not sure what to do.
I do love my family a lot, but I have been here for about 30 days now and feel like I need to go on a walk. Greece, at least for the USA passport holders, allows you 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. So that's great! 3 Moths, no Visa, nice.
The cost of living in Greece, is higher than it was in Vietnam, but cheaper than in the USA. So, while that will hurt the savings, it may be good in the long term.
Budgeting
A Single person's estimated monthly costs online says about : €1,094 // ($1,239)
This is renting on Airbnb, cooking at home more than going out, and perhaps having 1 drink at the bar at night, and modest entertainment. So, living on a cheap budget.
(This per 30 days)
| Item | Notes | Per day | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | One way / one time | $400.00 | |
| Living | AirBnB | Perhaps $500 | $450.00 |
| Food | Street | $15 | $450.00 |
| Entertainment | Fees for locations | $8 | $240.00 |
| Water | Refill bottle | $4 | $120.00 |
| coffee | Perhaps more... | $3 | $90.00 |
| Transport | Metro | $3 | $90.00 |
| Phone | Wifi Data | $1.2 | $36.00 |
- Total: $1,876.00
- No Flight : $1,476.00
My budget is $1,200 per month or €1,060... so I need to find a way to save or remove $276 a month from that budget, or earn that difference back. In theory, I could get that back on the hive if I posted every day, and those posts earned $9.20 HBD ($36.8 HBD total up vote (50/50 Curators / 50/50 rewards power up), but that is not something to bank on.
I also think I am budgeting too much for food, with my research pointing to street Souvlaki for about €3, and a coffee, about that as well, so perhaps only €14 a day? So, my time in Greece would not put me ahead in savings, perhaps drain a little of it? Figuring in extra costs that are unknown right now, or tipping, or who knows.
The Athens, Greece Experience, Is it worth it?
If you asked me if I thought that Greece was a place worthy of visiting, there's no way I could tell you. I would have to experience and live there in order to truly know how the country is. So, is the Athens Greece experience worth it? I'll be honest with you, I still don't know. But, I can say that I did have an incredible time in Vietnam, and I was unsure at first as well.
The world has changed rapidly over the past decade. And, there are a lot of things that I'm still trying to learn about this world. However, there are some things that I am absolutely certain about and that is the importance of travel and new experiences.
I am about 90% set on making this experience happen. I wish I had a friend to travel with as that would reduce the costs by about 25%, or some contacts in Greece to show me around and introduce me to the real Greece. Wishes don't always come true, so we must do or do not, I am of the mind set "To Do".
In conclusion and from my research, Athens has many opportunities for the curious tourist to explore it seems. It is a unique opportunity to engage with the ancient origins of Western civilization and philosophy. They say... If you can visit Athens and not feel inspired or not gain some creative energy from that experience, then you have no soul. I need creativity, need a refresh, so I think perhaps it is worth the ding in savings to experience this...
