St. Joseph's Cathedral - Nhà Thờ Lớn Hà Nội

I flew up to Hanoi to work on a project, a project that I am rather bummed to say is not going as well as I would have liked it to.. lol. This morning I went for a walk to the BIG OLD CATHEDRAL of St. Joseph.

I was told that it is a copy of the Notradame cathedral, and that when the French had control of Hanoi, they demolished a temple that was here to put this up.

The building is in the style of the Gothic Revival of the 19-century - the Neo-Gothic style of building. It was (is?) the center of the Roman Catholic movement of Hanoi and boasts a membership of over 4 million Catholics in the country! Not too bad I think...

The inside is all marble with stain glass windows. Walking around the inside is sorta a strange feeling. The marble floors and high vaulted ceilings have a very different feeling than other locations in Vietnam.

To me, while it is an impressive building, feel a bit small and out of place but also in the right place... I know, strange contrast.

Anywho, here are some photos, I hope you enjoy them.

  • This building has a nice street-facing front.
  • Around the back, it has some intimidating wall action going on too!
  • This was on the side of the building when walking about the outside.
