Dennis Hill, Lower loop, Frozen

What Cool Friends?

The cold weather may not be the most desirable to some, but I love it. One of my favorite things to do during the cold seasons is going on hikes in the snow for hours to hours. When the weather is cold, I feel comfortable with myself and I am more outgoing.

Eight days ago when I got back to Connecticut, my little sister and I went for a hike at Dennis Hill I wrote an article about it, you can read right HERE. Since that hike, the weather has become a bit more chilly. So this morning the little sister and I set out for another early morning hike at about 8:30 AM. Our goal was to go to the same hiking location - Dennis Hill lower loop.

The photos below are from that icy morning hike, when the trees were glistening with a small layer of ice covering them, the leaves being crisp with frost crumbled under toe, and the trees creaked as they swayed in the gentle freezing breeze.

Put a sweater on and join me for these icy cool pictures. :D

Location

The cold was pretty apparent when we first got on the truck to head over to the hike. The front windshield was still coded in the layer of ice from Jack Frost, but the rickety old defroster was doing its best to combat the freezing temperature.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by a frozen winter scape. The light rain from the day before that coated the trees and bushes has now become a cocoon for this environment.

All the trees and leaves and grass had a small shimmering shell of ice that was put them in a hard blanket. This winter wonderland felt a little magical while walking amongst the frozen trees, and it was a feeling that I had forgotten how much I enjoyed so long ago.

The way the sun played through the pine boughs and leaves as we strolled to the forest, shimmering and glistening all the while. However, I do admit my hands were a bit cold and started to feel numb at the beginning half of this walk. Towards the end, however, they warmed up nicely.

Hiking-20.jpg

All the little puddles and normally flowing Brooks were frozen solid. I wanted to spend awhile taking photos with my little sister, had to get to work, so we could do only a short walk.

Hiking-25.jpg

These photos don't do justice to just how cool this place looked, with all the little leaves and trees, frozen ice abounds.

Hiking-6.jpg

A few times, my little sister had to say "come on, catch up", as I was dallying looking at the ice and trying to capture good photos. Hahaha.

Hiking-7.jpg

Even just walking over the fallen maple leaves covered in snow, hearing the leaves crunch as he walked through the woods, felt special.

Hiking-8.jpg

The rock walls usually covered in lichen and moss also felt more silent today than usual, their micro life ecosystems, also halted for the winter's nap.

Hiking-9.jpg

After a while, we reached the top of the hill where the lookout tower is, well, not so much a tower as a lookout gazebo... where a long time ago, residents used to host hot barbecues and cookouts.

Hiking-22.jpg

It, too, featured the icy kiss of winters touch, with its outer edge dripping in icicles.

Hiking-24.jpg

Crispy, crispy cold icicles, waiting to be warmed and melted once again.

Hiking-26.jpg

But not right now, as these little baby droplets of frozen wonder, stay frozen and still.

Hiking-15.jpg

For real, I can't get enough how cool these frozen trees look.

Hiking-27.jpg

How nice the frozen ground says to me "hello, why don't you lay down in me for a bit and take a long nap", but to the ground I say hell no. I say you are beautiful, but I'll not nap with you now I have too much to do.

Hiking-12.jpg

The gentle pine leaves reached out again with their frozen tears, weeping as I walked past as they would not be able to feast on my skin today.

Hiking-14.jpg

Sorry beautiful frozen leaves - will be back to walk with you again soon!

Hiking-16.jpg

But here is the good old black dog pulling me along, I blame him for some less ideal photos, it's hard to take a steady shot while a big old dog is pulling you along.

Hiking-29.jpg

My little sister, and 2 dogs went on a hike on the ice. It's a good Morning.

Hiking-30.jpg

Here we are looking accomplished after the winter walk.

Hiking-31.jpg

And here I am, perhaps you can not see, but it is not gray in the stash, The mustache has started to freeze over on the walk today. Hahahaha.

Hiking-32.jpg

As always thank you for joining me on today's adventure, I hope you found from the pictures as cool as it was outside when I took them.

Hope to see you back here again tomorrow for some more exciting stories of something different.

  • Cheers
