A Hike up to the Trigonion (Chain) Tower, Thessaloniki, Greece

When you think about Ancient Greece, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Parthenon. But what about the other ancient structures in Greece? One such structure is the Trigonion Tower. This tower is located in the town of Thessaloniki and is known for its intricate design. This blog is about my experience of being at the tower--read on for more!

The Trigonion Tower
The Trigonion Tower in Thessaloniki, Greece is a must-see for anyone in the area. Dating back to the Byzantine Empire, the tower has gone through many changes. It was once used as a watchtower and then, later on, became a prison, hospital, and even a nightclub. But it’s now open to the public and offers an amazing view of the city below.
I was able to visit the tower a few days back when a local told me about it. I wasn't disappointed! There was so much history surrounding me and I couldn't help but imagine what life would have been like for those who lived there centuries ago. As I walked up the stairs, I felt every stone beneath my feet telling stories of thousands of prisoners sentenced here for life or for a small infraction that would not be tolerated today.
It’s hard to believe this incredible building is still standing after all it's seen--in fact, it’s only because of its location that it hasn't been torn down already! But now people can enjoy the beauty of this historical landmark without having to worry about being jailed--it’s open to all who wants to see it.
Be ready for a lot of uphill walking, and it may take you about 20 - 30 min to reach the top.
If you're ever in Thessaloniki and want an adventure, head up to the top of this ancient tower and take in one of Greece's most beautiful views!
My Hiking Experience
I hiked up to the Trigonion Tower in Thessaloniki, Greece on a Saturday afternoon. I had originally planned on walking around just looking at random things, but after I stopped for a snack and talked with the owner, they suggested I go see it, so stumbled upon this great find. It's an uphill hike--definitely not for anyone who can't climb stairs--but it was worth it for the view. As soon as I got to the top, there were many other tourists taking pictures and admiring the scenery below, along with locals just hanging out.
The views from the tower are spectacular! You can see all of Thessaloniki from above, and it really gives you a new perspective on what life is like up there. There's also a restaurant at the top of the tower which offers Greek food, drinks, and music.
If you're going to be in Thessaloniki anytime soon, this is a must-see!
Tips for Your Visit
There are a few things to keep in mind before visiting. For example, there is no public transportation to the tower (At least that I could find) --so it's best to either drive or take a taxi, or if you are feeling adventurous, walk like I did. Additionally, there is the tower on top, I believe it is open on occasions, but you just walk up to the top, there is no operating house, you just sort of go.
Also, lots of steps and a steep walk up, so be ready for that.
A final thing to remember is that if you're thinking about going in the morning, or better at Sunset, don’t forget your camera! On a clear day, the view is absolutely stunning!
Final Thoughts
The Trigonion Tower is an impressive sight and well worth a visit for anyone travelling to Thessaloniki. The tower is a reminder of the city's rich history and its importance as a cultural and commercial center.
I chose to walk about by wandering along the wall back to the waterfront. This provided a unique exploration of the city, along with some great photos!
It was interesting to see how the wall, has become part of the city now, with people driving through it. I have to wonder if they still think back to the history of the wall, or just accept it as it is.
