In this article today I would like to take you to the discovery of a very important archaeological park in Italy, it is the Grottoes of Catullus which are located at the end of the Sirmione peninsula in the province of Brescia on Lake Garda.
In a previous article I had talked about the castle of Sirmione an interesting tourist point to visit certainly in Sirmione but another interesting point to visit are certainly the caves of Catullus which are also located in a truly exceptional place with a beautiful panoramic view of the lake.
However in the end these structures were called Catullus' caves because they were discovered in the Renaissance and you have to imagine that all these remains were covered with scrub and therefore they looked like natural cavities that is why it was given this name but in reality this archaeological site refers to an important Roman Villa which was built here in Sirmione in 54 BC.

You must think that the first excavations in this archaeological site took place between 1947-1949 and it is there that they understood that it was a sumptuous villa even if in reality, given its size, it could almost be interpreted as a small Roman city.
However, the park is structured with an archaeological museum in the initial part where any type of artifact that was found on this site during excavations is collected while then there is the part where there is the Parco degli Ulivi and there is the villa that it is possible to visit through the paths that cross it.
I was very impressed with these archaeological remains even if in reality it is difficult to understand from these ruins how sumptuous this villa is in my opinion we should use a bit of technology a bit like they do in the United States when they present their museums.
However, it is worth coming up here just to see the view of the lake which unfortunately was very cloudy that day.
