On my last visit down the south of Thailand we ended up at Muang Sing (Lion City) Historical Park in Kanchanaburi were we saw the remains of an ancient city that dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

The Muang Sing (Lion City) was built in Khmer style with large boulders cut into square shapes to build the walls to defend the city against attacks by the Burmese army.

The old ancient city is still beautifully preserved with lots of lush green grass surrounding the old city and lovely Banyan trees that still make the old city look very real.

Walking around the ancient city looking at all these dark burnt rusty looking boulders felt like you were in an oven with the heat coming in from all around you but despite the heat we wandered around, in awe of the grandeur of the place it was so peaceful and quiet as we were the only ones there.

Can you image how many man hours when into cutting them huge boulders down into square shapes and then lifting them into place no cranes or stone cutting machines in the 13th or 14th centuries.

Being away from the big city of Bangkok with all the hustle and bustle i was really appreciated the stillness of the countryside and the ability to listen to the wind and birds.

There were also temple that were built in the ground of this ancient city and the main temple that partially still stands in the center of this complex was built between the 12th and 14th century in Bayon style, named after the Bayon temple in Angkor that was built around the same time.

It was certainly worth the visit to the Muang Sing Historical Park it's the perfect place to learn about those long gone days and it has beautiful landscape covered with trees and flowers to mark you feel you are in a lost temple of the jungle. It's just over a 2 hour drive from Bangkok city or you can take a train down to the ancient city.
