Mezi středoevropskými hlavními městy Prahou, Vídní a Budapeští je slovenská metropole Popelkou. Ale i ona má co turistům nabídnout. Ikonickému panoramatu hradu ve tvaru obráceného stolu a mostu přes Dunaj s restaurací ve tvaru UFO sekunduje moderní část Downtown s mrakodrapy. Dalším oblíbeným místem turistů je historické centrum nebo promenáda podél Dunaje.  

EN: The Slovak capital Bratislava is, among the Central European capitals of Prague, Vienna and Budapest, something of a Cinderella. Yet it certainly has plenty to offer visitors. Its iconic skyline, dominated by the castle resembling an upside-down table and the bridge over the Danube with its UFO-shaped restaurant, is complemented by the modern Downtown district with its skyscrapers. Other popular destinations include the historic centre and the riverside promenade along the Danube.

Do odjezdu vlaku mi zbývaly tři hodiny (podle jízdního řádu, nakonec se k tomu přidala hodina zpoždění), a tak jsem čas využil k poznání míst, která nejsou úplně turisticky exponovaná a kde lze spíše potkat místní než davy návštěvníků. Na vrchu Slavín drží stráž monumentální socha vojáka. V okolí památníku se nachází množství hrobů vojáků padlých za druhé světové války. Z místa ležícího 249 metrů nad mořem se navíc otevírá pěkný výhled na město. 

EN:  I had three hours before my train had scheduled time to leave (in fact it had more than an hour delay), so I decided to spend them exploring places that are not quite as crowded with tourists and where I was more likely to meet locals than large groups of visitors. On Slavín hill, a monumental statue of a soldier stands guard. The area around the memorial contains numerous graves of soldiers who fell during the Second World War. At 249 metres above sea level, the site also offers a pleasant view over the city.

Ze Slavína jsem se vydal na Murmanskou výšinu, kde stojí mnohem skromnější památník věnovaný obětem první světové války. Červená turistická značka mě pak vedla dál k Horskému parku. Nachází se zde přírodní galerie a restaurace, která je oblíbeným cílem rodinných výletů. Červená značka pokračuje přes vrch Machnáč k Mlýnské dolině s televizními vysílači, hřbitovu Slavičí Údolie a zoologické zahradě. Já se však vydal opačným směrem, zpět do města.

EN: From Slavín, I headed to Murman's highland, where a much more modest memorial commemorates the victims of the First World War. From there, the red hiking trail led me on towards Horský park. The park is home to an open-air gallery and a restaurant that is a popular destination for family outings. The red trail continues over Machnáč hill towards Mlýnska dolina, with its television transmitters, Slavičí Údolie cemetery and the zoo. I, however, took the opposite direction, heading back towards the city centre

Prostorné Námestie Sľobody s parkem a vodním prvkem ve tvaru květu je místem setkávání mladých. Děti si užívají brouzdání ve fontáně, ostatní piknikují na dekách, baví se na lavičkách anebo tančí na reprodukovanou hudbu. 

Od památníku  věnovanému listopadovým událostem roku 1989 je výhled na Úrad vlády SR. Od ideálů revoluce k hořké realitě je to nějakých sto metrů.

EN: The spacious Námestie Sľobody, with its park and tulip-shaped water fountain, is a popular meeting place, especially for young people. Children enjoy splashing around in the fountain, while others picnic on blankets, chat on the benches or dance to music playing from speakers.

From the memorial commemorating the events of November 1989, there is a view of  the seat of the Slovak government. It is roughly a hundred metres from the ideals of the revolution to the bitter reality of nowadays politics.

V Bratislavě nenajdete jen obrácený stůl, tedy Bratislavský hrad, ale také obrácenou pyramidu. Ve viditelně chátrající budově sídlí Slovenský rozhlas.

Čas odjezdu vlaku se už blíží, a tak se musím vrátit na nádraží. Hned u něj se nachází Múzeum dopravy, které je touto dobou už zavřené. Některé exponáty však lze zahlédnout skrz drátěný plot. Doufám, že se do Bratislavy brzy vrátím a budu mít možnost navštívit i další zajímavá místa.

EN: In Bratislava, you can find not only an upside-down table – the Bratislava castle – but also an upside-down pyramid. The visibly deteriorating building is home to Slovenský rozhlas, the Slovak Radio.

My train departure time is approaching, so I have to make my way back to the station. Right next to it stands Múzeum dopravy, the Transport Museum, which is already closed by this time. Some of its exhibits can nevertheless be glimpsed through the wire fence.

I hope I will return to Bratislava soon and have a chance to discover some of the other interesting places the city has to offer.
