I don’t eat fish, I never have done, it’s a little fishy to me. My partner does though, she loves the stuff, so we decided to take a boat trip out into the bay when visiting Cornwall to try and catch some dinner. Apparently there was Mackerel in the water ready to be caught, so we though we’d give it a go.
Our skipper was a Cornish fisherman call Chris, who took us out on his boat, called Aquila. We were shown how to use the rods, and how cast off, and reel in the line, and how to know when you had a bite. I felt like I knew what I was doing, but I guess the proof is in the pudding. An hour of fishing and I’m sorry to say I didn’t get a nibble!
Luckily Suzie has better with the rod than me and managed to take home around 4 mackerel which we took home and cooked for lunch. (I’m afraid to say I had a traditional Cornish Pasty instead due to my aversion to eating creatures from the deep.
Luckily I wasn’t too fussy about catching fish, most of the experience for me was about enjoying the sea, and getting a chance to see the coastline from a different perspective. This trip took us around Mevagissy Bay, and then past the beach at Portmellon, and on to the peninsula at Chapel Point.
It’s a different life living off of the sea, and it was fascinating to experience a slice of life on the ocean waves, even if it was only for an hour…
