My visit to the National Pavilion of Biodiversity/ Mi visita al Pabellón Nacional de Biodiversidad

A few days ago I visited the National Pavilion of Biodiversity. This is a biodiversity museum located in the university city of the UNAM in Mexico City, the place is rather small, but it holds some very interesting and beautiful elements of Mexico's nature. So, I would like to share the experience with you, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

How to get there?

If you are in Mexico City, you can go to the university campus, you can enter either from Insurgentes or from Imán Avenue. If you plan to arrive using public transportation, you can take the Metrobús to the Centro Cultural Universitario station and then walk about 400 meters to the pavilion, or you can wait for a Pumabús (university transportation) that is free and takes you directly to the pavilion. Another option is to take the metro to the university station, enter the university campus, and wait to take a Pumabús from route 3 to that place. Both options are very affordable. Just keep in mind that if you plan to go during holidays, it will be harder to move around within the campus.

General elements of the Pavilion

The pavilion was built by the Carlos Slim Foundation and its entrance is free of charge. It is housed in a cylindrical building with a central staircase that provides access to its different floors and exhibition rooms. It has six permanent exhibition rooms that address different elements of Mexican and global biodiversity. In addition, in the basement, it has a cafeteria, a souvenir shop, and a small area for art exhibitions. However, the purpose of this post is not to become a guided tour, but rather to tell you about my experiences and impressions so that I can motivate you to visit.

The impressive stuff

One of the things that impressed me the most on the visit were the cetacean skeletons that can be admired as soon as you enter the place. First and foremost, dominating the entrance, you can admire the skeleton of a Sperm Whale. This animal, in spite of their name, is NOT a whale, but a dolphin, this is easy to confirm, as whales do not have teeth, while dolphins do. In a room located further to the right of the entrance, you can see hanging from the ceiling a skeleton of a whale; however, I could not find the informative panel for this one, so I couldn't confirm what species it is.

Another animal on display that was truly impressive is the Golden Eagle. I was mainly impressed by the size and wingspan that these animals can reach. It is difficult to imagine how large they can be until you have the opportunity to see them up close, even if they are (as in this case) taxidermied animals.

Finally, perhaps not as appealing as the animals, but I was particularly impressed by the exhibition of a cross-section of a tree trunk. And what I find extremely interesting is how trees hold within them the scars and memories of their history, in addition to being able to know their age by the number of growth rings, it is possible to know from the thickness of these rings in which years they fared better, if they were damaged at any time, or even if they survived a fire, all that can be known just by looking at the heart of the wood.

The interesting stuff

Among the exhibitions that we were able to see, some arachnids stand out for me, they might seem like they are taken from a horror movie or alien worlds, but they are very real and completely indispensable for ecosystem health. They may not meet what we commonly call beautiful (right, @Alicia2022?), but I assure you they are extremely important. At least one of them may be recognized by those who have seen Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but it was not a fantastic creation, they are very real and despite their appearance, completely harmless.

The striking Stuff

One of the rooms is set to simulate the conditions and environment of a tropical jungle, although I must say that I do not celebrate the use of plants or some artificial animals, it is worth recognizing the work of the creators of this scene who manage to transport us to a piece of tropical jungle to a certain extent even while being in the middle of the city.

The beautiful Stuff

Of all the things we could appreciate, perhaps the most beautiful to me was the collection of butterflies, of which there are several and very diverse but all impressive. Of these I can say little, I think their colors speak laud enough.

The art

As I was telling, in the basement of the pavilion there is a small exhibition room of works of art, mostly with natural motifs and all of great beauty.

Final considerations 

This is a very interesting and instructive trip you can enjoy if you are in México City, in adition its a very economic one, you can do the visit for less than 20 MXN (about 1 dolar). However, the location of the museum is far south of the city, so I recomend to include some money for lunch. which can be anywhere from 40 MNX to 200 MXN ( 2.5 to 12 USD). Also, you may consider that the place have a souvenirs store, so if you are interested to take some home, you may want to consider that in your budget.

Hola chicos

Hace unos días fui de visita al Pabellón Nacional de la Biodiversidad. Este es un museo de biodiversidad ubicado en la ciudad universitaria de la UNAM en Ciudad de México, el sitio es un lugar más bien pequeño, pero guarda algunos elementos muy interesantes y bellos de la naturaleza de México. De manera que me gustaría compartir con ustedes la experiencia, espero que la disfruten como la disfruté yo.

Cómo llegar

Si estás en Ciudad de México puedes irte hasta la ciudad universitaria, puedes entrar ya sea desde Insurgentes Sur o desde Avenida del Imán. Si planeas llegar utilizando en transporte público puedes llegar en Metrobús hasta la estación Centro Cultural Universitario y luego caminar unos 400 metros hasta el pabellón o puedes esperar un pumabús (el trasnporte universitario) que es gratis y te leva justo hasta enfrente al pabellón. Otra opción es ir en metro hasta la estación universidad, entrar a la ciudad universitaria y esperar tomar un pumabús de la ruta 3 hasta ese lugar. Ambas opciones son muy asequibles. Solo debes tener en cuenta que si piensas ir en vacaciones te será más difícil moverte dentro de la ciudad universitaria.  

Elementos generales del Pabellón

El pabellón fue construido por la fundación Carlos Slim y su entrada es libre de costo. Está alojado en un edificio cilíndrico con una escalinata central que da acceso a sus diferentes pisos y salas de exposición. Cuenta con seis salas de exposición permanente que abordan diferentes elementos de la biodiversidad mexicana y global. Además de que en el sótano cuenta con una cafetería, una tienda de souvenirs y una pequeña zona de exposición de obras de arte. No obstante no es el objetivo de este post convertise en una visita guiada, sino más bien contarles mis experiencias e impresiones de manera que les pueda motivar a visitarlo.

Lo impresionante

Una de las cosas que más me impresionó en la vista fueron las osamentas de cetáceos que se pueden admirar nada más entrar al lugar, en primer lugar y dominando la entrada se puede admirar la osamenta de un Cachalote. Este animal a diferencia de lo que que muchas personas creen NO es una ballena, sino un delfín, esto es fácil de confirmar, pues las ballenas no tienen dientes, mientras que los delfines sí. En una sala ubicada a más a la derecha de la entrada se puede aprecier colgando del techo un esqueleto, ahora sí de una ballena, sin embargo de este no encontré el panel informativo de modo que no pude confirmar de qué especie se trata.

Otro animal en exibición que resultó realmente impresionante es el águila real. Me impresionó fundamental el porte y envergadura que pueden alcanzar estos animales. La verdad es difícil imaginar cuán grandes pueden ser hasta que se tiene la oportunidad de apreciarlos de cerca, aunque sea como en este caso) animales taxidermiados.

Por último, quizás no tan atractivo como los animales, pero me impresionó particularmente la exposición de un corte transversal del tronco de un árbol. Y lo que me parece extremadamente interesante es como los árboles guardan en su interior las cicatrices y memorias de su historia, además de poder saber su edad por la cantidad de anillos de crecimiento que tienen es posible saber por el grosor de estos anillos en cuales años les fue mejor, si en algún momento fue dañado o incluso si sobrevivió algún incendio, todo eso se puede saber solo con mirar al corazón de la madera.

Lo interesante

Entre las exposiciones que pudimos apreciar para mí destacan varios arácnidos que puedieran parecer sacados de una película de terror o de mundos extraterrestres, pero que sin embargo son muy reales y además completamente imprescidibles para la salud de los ecosistemas, puede que no cumplan con lo que pudieramos llamar comúnmente bello (¿verdad @alicia2022?) pero les aseguro que son extremadamente importantes. Al menos uno de ellos puede que los que hayan visto Harry Potter y el Cáliz de Fuego, pero no fue una creación fantástica, son muy reales y a pesar de su aspecto completamente inofensivos.

Lo llamativo

Una de las salas está ambientada con objetivo de simular las condiciones y el ambiente de una selva tropical, aunque debo decir que no celebro el uso de plantas o algunos animales artificiales es de reconocer el trabajo de los creadores de esta escena que logran hasta cierto punto transportarnos hasta un pedazo de selva tropical, aún estando en medio de la ciudad.

Lo hermoso

De todas las cosas que pudimos apreciar para mí quizas la más hermosa fue la colección de mariposas, de las cuales hay varias y muy diversas pero todas impresionantes. De estas no tengo mucho que decir, pienso que sus colores comunican suficiente.

El arte

Como les contaba, en el sótano del pabellón hay una pequeña sala de exposición de obras de arte, en su mayoría con motivos naturales y todas de una gran belleza.

Consideraciones finales

Este es un viaje muy interesante e instructivo que puedes puedes disfrutar si están en Ciudad de México, adicionalmente es muy económico. Puedes hacer la visita con menos de 20 MXN (alrededor de 1 USD). Sin embargo, la ubicación del mismo está lejos, en el sur de la ciudad, de manera que recomiendo que incluyen algún dinero para almuerzo que puede ser la cantidad que gusten entre 40 y 200 MXN (de 2,5 a 12 USD). También deben tener en cuenta en su presupuesto que el sitio cuenta con una tienda de souvenirs, de manera que si están interesados en llevarse algunos también deben considerar esos gastos.
