When El Rastro's Over / Když skončí El Rastro

Un rastro means a flea market in Spanish. Yet, there’s The Flea Market, arguably the largest and most popular in Spain. It takes place in Madrid city centre every Sunday. Or I should rather say that El Rastro occupies a bunch of streets and squares since it sometimes resembles of a public riot. Yes, the Spaniards are loud.

You can buy literary everything that would cross your mind plus several things you hadn’t even known they were real. Pundits sometimes reveal a lost art piece there. Collectors trade anything from Pokémon and football cards to rare Chinese porcelain. I wouldn’t be really surprised if someone offered NFT’s there. Pickpockets (and there are plenty) pick pockets...

However, I like the moment when El Rastro’s over. All the onlookers vanish into the nearest bar for a merienda, vermouth and coffee. All the vendors pack in almost no time. Within 20 or 30 minutes, all the calles and plazas would be empty (and messed a bit). Until the evening, of course. And that’s how it looks like.

Un rastro je španělsky bleší trh. El Rastro je bleší trh s velkým B. Největší a nejpopulárnější v celém Španělsku. Koná se každou neděli v centru Madridu. Tedy koná, spíše tak nějak okupuje tucet ulic a několik náměstí. Občas vypadá spíš jako občanské nepokoje než jako bleší trh. Ano, Španělé jsou opravdu hluční.

Můžete tu koupit doslova cokoli vám přijde na mysl. Plus něco z toho, o čem jste ani netušili, že opravdu existuje. Znalci umění tu občas objeví dávno ztracený kousek. Sběratelé mění všechno počínaje Pokémony a fotbalovými kartičkami a vzácným čínským porcelánem konče. Nedivil bych se, kdyby tu někdo nabízel NFT. Chmatáci (a že jich tu je), chmatají...

Ale nejradši mám okamžik, kdy El Rastro končí. Všichni čumilové se vypaří do nejbližšího baru na meriendu, vermuth a kafe. Prodejci jsou sbalení, než bys řekl švec. Za dvacet až třicet minut jsou všechny calles a plazas liduprázdné (a zaneřáděné). Tedy liduprázdné až do večera. Takhle to vypadá.
