The whereonwednesday tag is something I came up with to give me a little mid-week daydream whilst stuck in my office working - Through my post I can get carried away to wherever I would rather be; Somewhere I've been or want to be, and this week because the concept is mine to change as I see fit, I've added a little what so it's a combination where&whatonwednesdaypost. I hope you don't mind.
So...Where? And also what?
You're looking at the view from our favourite restaurant in Thailand called Baan Rim Pa Patong. That's the where. The what, quite predictably, is dinner at the restaurant with my number one girl. Faith.
The restaurant
The restaurant itself clings to a cliff face at the northern end of Patong in a place called Kalim Beach. You can see Patong Beach heading away into the distance in the image below. The restaurant is set over two levels in an open-air teak house. We always prefer the balcony though and make sure to book early enough to secure a place there. [I suggest you definitely book or you may not even get in!]
The views are pretty special and combined with the excellent food, service, and the sound of lapping waves as the sun dips low, it makes this spot one of the best for a special evening away from the lively streets off the Patong strip.
There's nothing but ocean and horizon to the west and as one's meal unfolds, and the sun sets, each moment seems just a little more special than the next.
It's the perfect spot for proposals of which we've seen a few over the years.
The staff are expert at setting the mood and catering for special requests also. It's amazing how polite and accommodating the Thai people can be and in all our experiences they've been nothing but helpful, polite, professional and friendly.
The food
Baan Rim Pa Patong offers a menu of Royal Thai cuisine which means the dishes were formerly only found in the Grand Palace of Thailand; It sounds magnificent, and as you sit sipping your cocktail the smells emanating from the kitchens smells magnificent too! The choices are many, and so we get to sample a wide variety we share dishes starting with entrees and a few mains between us. The menu is extensive and my suggestion is to order another drink and take your time to peruse it. Hell, get two drinks - Let your hair down and relax! You're on holiday after all.
These were taken directly from the dinner table during one of our visits.
For those who love a wine the cellar comprises several hundred selections and offers wine from all over the world - You'll not be disappointed and the staff are happy to guide you through the choices and options.
The Baan Rim Pa Patong is one of those restaurants that makes you feel welcome, like an old friend, which is what we love about it.
Dinner here isn't a simple eat and leave experience - We make it an entire evening spending time in the piano bar prior to dinner and of course a long and enjoyable meal with an amazing view. It's the perfect spot to unwind after a day of water-sports, island-hopping or simply lazing around the pool at the resort and can be as formal or casual as you would like it to be. The dress code is reasonably relaxed, but don't arrive straight from the beach, it's a classy restaurant and it's not uncommon to see people go to a lot of effort with their appearance. Here you can see Faith reviewing the menu...Decisions, decisions...
I can't count how many times we have been there; A lot is probably as close as I can get. We always stay at the Novotel hotel across the road so it's close and easily reached without a car or motorbike. It's within easy reach of the whole area though and a tuk tuk driver will get you there in no time. We usually walk there, then after dinner walk into the main entertainment area of Patong for a look around at its craziness and then get a tuk tuk back to the Novotel later for a midnight swim.
All images in the above collage are from the Baan Rim Pa Patong website, all others are my own.
The living is easy in Thailand and it's a monumentally beautiful place to be - Full of polite and courteous people, amazing sights to see, warm weather and glistening beaches. The Australian dollar goes a long way, Euro and USD even further, and one could do far worse than planning a trip there. I think it's great that Steemfest 4 is being held there in Bangkok and those lucky enough to attend will have a great time. For those able to hit Thailand prior to or after Steemfest 4 make sure you take the time to explore...And if chance should bring you close to this restaurant get yourself booked in. You will not regret it.
Anyway, that's where I'd rather be and what I'd rather be doing right now.
Just tag #whereonwednesday in your post, on a Wednesday, to join in if you would like. It's not a challenge or anything dumb like that, neither do you get anything for it. It's just a chance to post your thoughts and maybe a picture or two.
