And these are not the only occasions – if we don’t feel like cooking at home, spontaneously wanting to go out for lunch, it’s an easy decision. We just have to look at each other and both say Trovador at the same time.

The restaurant went under some restaurations a couple of years ago but they kept the big wooden bar with the vitrina de tapas on top, next to the draft beer. And most of the waiters are still working there from the time when we first visited.

El Trovador serves home cooked Valencian meals but also more general Spanish dishes. And if you’re wondering where the name comes from – The word “trovador” in Spanish is used to describe a “troubadour,” who was a poet and musician during the medieval period. These artists composed and sang songs, often focusing on themes of chivalry and courtly love.

But now let’s get to the food! On this particular day we ordered:

Mike

  • Arroz Rosechat
  • Codillo Agridulce
  • Contessa Ice Cream

Juergen

  • Gazpacho Andaluz
  • Ternera con Guarnición
  • Tarta de chocolate

The Gazpacho Andaluz doesn’t need any explanation but it’s worth to point out that the waiter come with a tray will all kinds of toppings and you just have to pick and choose and make this chilled soup your own. Arroz Rosechat was a new dish for us, more commonly spelled like this: Arroz Rossejat – a rice dish which reminded us a lot of Arroz al Horno but with meatballs on top (delicious). For the second plate Juergen’s tenera (beef fillet with garnish and fries) was good but what hit it out of the ballpark was the sweet and sour pork knuckle Mike was enjoying. The Comtessa ice cream is a classic but not a homemade dessert but the tarta de chocolate was and was just so rich!

El Trovador is an institution and it gets very busy quickly, to score a table without waiting we recommend to show up at 1:30 pm, this should get you seated right away. We always wanted to go for their Almuerzo as well but never managed to do so. Have you been? Is it worth it?
