It takes two days to sail to South Georgia, after about 24 hours the wind and swell thankfully lessens. Dunk has bought me pressure point wrist bands and I finally manage to eat a little to line my stomach. Life is good again.

It was a strange feeling being on the trip of a lifetime and feeling trapped because you feel so bad and literally can’t get off the boat.

We have 4 days ahead of us in South Georgia with two excursions planned for each day. Either landing on a beach or cruising along the coastline in small zodiacs.

There are days which start with a snow blizzard and end with warming sun. But mainly it’s grey with a high wind chill. I’m getting used to knowing what to wear and it’s becoming more comfortable.

Bio security ramps up to make sure that we don’t take any contaminants and seeds ashore.

Many of the guests have super long telephoto lenses are mainly involved in trying to capture the wildlife. My ancient phone means that you won’t get lots of amazing pictures from me here but I have got some from others and the proximity that we could get to the seals and penguins was quite breathtaking. The fur seals are pupping and breeding at the moment so were a bit feisty and we had to keep an eye out for bulls charging at anytime. Evidently they can run faster than us so we each took hiking poles which dissuades them coming too close.

We have crossed The Antarctic Convergence which is a roughly 40-km-wide water zone in the Southern Ocean in which cold, northward-flowing currents sink below warmer, southward-flowing surface water.

The temperature drops and it’s now around 0 degrees with wind chill means that outside I am wearing 2 or 3 base layer tops plus a jumpers and jacket. Hat, buff, 2 pairs of gloves. Thermal bottoms and ski trousers.

Going out on deck becomes quite an exercise in intelligent dressing. There are a lot of whales, seals and birds to be seen so it’s well worth it. The stabilising binoculars that we bought really come into their own here.

The Sauna and Hot tub are a bonus after a couple of hours outside, especially after being in the Zodiac for an extended period.
