Hi there. Here is another post in my travel blog series. Our travel group goes from Shanghai to Beijing by high speed train. We stayed in Shanghai for 3 nights. The Ji Hotel we were at in Shanghai was very enjoyable.
Going To Shanghai Railway Station
Before I talk about getting to the station here are some bun pictures we had for breakfast. There was a small breakfast joint right beside our Ji Hotel near Lujiabang Road Metro Station.
The price was something like 3 buns for 5 Chinese Yuan. At the time 5 Chinese Yuan is around 1 CAD. Very inexpensive. There was not a lot of red bean buns so we got a lot of veggie filled buns. Shanghai food prices was much lower than I first expected. For a megacity I think the cost of food in Shanghai is much lower than Toronto.
When we arrived in Shanghai the station was called Shanghai Hongqiao station. The departure station from Shanghai for our trip was the Shanghai station. I had triple check the tickets and names to make sure we were going to the right place.
Shanghai Railway Station
After passing through the first security screening check we go up these escalators and see a Tim Hortons. I don't drink coffee but one of the other people wanted to try Tim Hortons in China. (Tim Hortons is a popular Canadian coffee chain but not as big as Starbucks) From of the tasters the Tim Hortons coffee cup tastes more like cappicino and tastes better than the watered down versions in Canada. The price of one 1 cup is around 25 CNY or around 5 CAD.
At the Shanghai Railway station you have more of separate waiting rooms instead of a big open area. Lineups are very big.
Train Trip From Shanghai To Beijing
The trip from Shanghai to Beijing by high speed train took around 4 hours and 30 minutes. This particular train is super fast for travelling around 1318 kilometres (819 miles). The fastest train speed was around 349 km/h. This particular route has faster trains than most of the other China trains. Faster as in faster by around 50 km/h.
Our travel group took the second class seats which were the cheapest and still comfortable. The price was around maybe 100 CAD per second class seat I think.
I did take pictures of the train washroom. They have a squat toilet and a regular Western style toilet. The washrooms are clean for the most part. Sometimes other users don't make things clean unfortunately. That is everywhere.
A lot of the train journeys features mountains, hills and tunnels. Here are some pictures.
The four hours and 30 minutes train trip was not too bad. On the train you can walk around for a bit after sitting for a while. There is also the option of having instant cup noodles as the trains have hot water available. A dining car is available for ordering food as well. High speed train is more convienient and cheaper compared to a domestic flight. It was an enjoyable train ride.
