So, picture this: the city is basically a goldmine of cool, unique landmarks, each with a rich slice of history baked right in. It’s like the whole place is a time capsule, and we’re seriously all about preserving those old-school vibes that these buildings carry. I mean, there's something pretty magical about how these historic spots connect us to the past, letting us soak in those memories in the most beautiful way.
Just the other day, I found myself wandering around the Kallang River area, right near the stadium. There’s this one spot I was totally hyped to check out—the Tanjong Rhu Lookout Tower. I’d been there a couple of times before, but this was the first time the tower was actually open to the public.
See, they’d been doing some repairs and maintenance before, which was kind of a bummer ‘cause I never got the chance to climb up and take in the view. But this time? The weather was perfect, and the tower was finally open. Nice!
So, from the stadium side, I crossed the Tanjong Rhu Bridge to get to the other side of the river, over in the Tanjong Rhu district.
The bridge is about 130 meters long, so it’s a quick stroll. It’s got this double A-frame thing going on, with cables suspending the bridge, and let me tell you, the design is something else. It’s one of those structures that look super impressive, whether you’re right up close or catching a glimpse from a distance.
Once I made it to the other side, I bee-lined straight for the lookout tower. It’s got this clean, simple design—kinda like a slimmed-down version of the Upper Seletar Rocket Tower. Not as flashy, but still really beautiful in its own way.
When I finally got to the top floor, man, the view blew me away. The wind up there was no joke, and I’ll admit, looking down from that height gave me a bit of a thrill. The first thing that caught my eye was the National Stadium with its iconic dome.
Seeing it from that angle was something else—like, I wouldn’t have even known it looked like that if I hadn’t been up there.
I started wondering if this tower had some special purpose back in the day. Since this area used to be a major shipbuilding hub, maybe the tower was a lookout for supervising the factory or something. Who knows?
Finding this hidden gem made me realize there’s still so much out there waiting for me to discover... I can’t wait to see what’s next.
