This traditional Bulgarian themed restaurant starts your dining experience as you step on the stairs. Welcome to Bulgaran Picnic Restaurant (Пикник „Българан“)
a warm welcome
It is traditional in Bulgaria to welcome your guest with fresh bread. Waiting for us a the door was a lovely traditionally dressed lady holding a plate of bread. Guests are welcomed to take a piece of bread and dip into the herb salt. This photo costed us 10 leva haha!
experience everything Bulgarian
Inside the restaurant there was a museum display of Bulgarian's proud agriculture tradition. They also had a dance circle where a singer performed live music all evening. Later in the dark, there was a special ritual all the diners got the opportunity to see (read further down to see!)
a menu of everything
On offer was a variety of delicious dishes popular here. They include salad, BBQ meat platters, shoestring fries and great wine. They even had our wine from New Zealand!
let's have a healthy start
The common starter here is a basic simple salad. Made of lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Anything else is a special local variety. We had a four cheese salad, and a bulgur salad.
a whole kilogram of BBQ
We got a platter of assorted BBQ meat and a basket of fries. There was a quarter chicken, various sausages, meat patties sitting on hot fresh fries. It was glorious. After the meal we had a long time chatting and relaxing slowly over the meal. It is cultural here to eat slowly and it can last until late at night. The food will get cold too!
a fiery performance
Later in the night, our waiter came to tell us there will be a special fire walking performance. Everyone got up from their table and walked towards the small amphitheatre to watch. It was an incredible ritual to watch. It is said the performer doesn't feel the burn from the heat at all.
More than just a dining experience
The evening started from 6 o'clock and by the time we left, it was 11pm! Undoubtedly this restaurant has provided a wonderful dining experience.
