GOODBYE ALOTAU.....

HELLLLOOOO KITAVA ISLAND!

After visiting the beautiful village in Alotau, now it was time for a bit of ocean and beach time! Our second stop on the P&O cruise to Papua New Guinea and Solomon Iaslands was the beautiful KITAVA ISLAND!

Kitava Island is located southeast of Papua New Guinea and is one of the four major islands (in the Trobriand Islands archipelago group) of the Solomon Sea. source

This is the Island view from the ship before getting off:
The P&O ship anchored offshore and we were provided with small boats that took us to and from the island throughout the day:

Once we got on the Island we were greeted by the local villagers with their market 'stalls' and children singing. The markets that were set up offered mostly a variety of handcrafts such as wooden carvings and woven baskets.
It is recommended to take Kina with you to the Island since they do not have an exchange there.
The prices were pretty reasonable. The small wooden carvings were set at a more reasonable price, however, for medium sized carved items made from Ebony the starting prices were around $200 - $300 Aus dollars. I guess they were used to having tourists from cruise ships visiting so the prices were probably set accordingly :

We stayed there for a bit and then took one of the local boats:

The boat ride across cost 5 kina (about 2.5 AUD) to the small Island nearest to us (which was literally a 2-3 min. boat ride!):

The Island/beach was AMAZING! It had the most beautiful colour blue sea I have ever seen! It was unspoilt and had very few people on it. White sand everywhere, with crystal clear water for swimming or snorkelling:

As the Island was very small, we decided to go for a walk around the shoreline where we found a beautiful spot to relax with plenty of shallow water for the kids to play in and explore. The water was so clear, it was as if we were in a swimming pool! We didn't even need to put on goggles to see all the fish, starfish, sea-cucumbers, corals and sea urchins that were all around us.

There were no shore trips here since the Island is very small. However, we felt it was exactly what we wanted- a beautiful paradise place to relax in and have the children play in tropical shallow waters and enjoying every minute!

HOPE YOU ENJOYED!
