- Scrivere in cinque lingue. I miei ospiti arrivano da tutta Europa. Cartelli, descrizioni, post: italiano, inglese, tedesco, francese, spagnolo, in pochi minuti.
Nessun amico me l'avrebbe detto così chiaramente.
🇬🇧 English
I spent forty years inside machines. I saw the first PC arrive in the office, floppy disks, 56k internet with its hellish screech, mobile phones, the cloud. I thought I had seen it all.
Then I moved to the hills of Cagli to become a farmer. And right here, among hens, beehives and a Lagotto named @choko.shock who steals my gloves, I realised the biggest revolution of my professional life arrived after I left it.
What AI actually does for a farmer
I'm not talking about robots hoeing the fields. I'm talking about real, everyday things:
- Writing in five languages. My guests come from all over Europe. Signs, descriptions, posts: Italian, English, German, French and Spanish, in minutes.
- Paperwork. Anyone who has filled in an application on a regional portal knows the pain. AI doesn't sign for me, but it helps me understand what is being asked and put my thoughts in order.
- Graphics and covers. This cover was drawn by AI, by writing code. I gave the idea: circuits turning into roots.
- Learning. Fukuoka, permaculture, water management on a hillside, beekeeping: I can ask questions at any hour, even at four in the morning (yes, like right now 😅).
- The critic I never had. I asked AI to tear my introduction post apart. It did: it pointed out forgotten placeholders, an electroculture trial too small to give reliable results, and the landslide risk of digging swales into our clay slopes. No friend would have told me so bluntly.
Hats off to the @peakd team 👏 Building an AI critic right inside the editor, available to every user, is exactly the kind of tool that makes Hive better: it pushes us to write more honestly and think more clearly. Thank you for the constant work on one of the best front-ends on the chain!
But be careful
AI is extremely powerful, but it is not magic, and it is not soil.
- It makes mistakes. Sometimes very confidently. It needs checking, like code from a talented but distracted junior developer.
- It doesn't know what happens in my garden. It didn't see the hens destroy the kale this morning. The stories are mine; it helps me tell them.
- Some people on Hive don't like AI-written content. I understand and respect that. So I'll say it plainly: I use AI as a pen and a translator. The ideas, the hard work, the mistakes and the muddy hands are all mine.
An old IT guy's lesson
Forty years taught me that every powerful tool amplifies whoever holds it. A hammer builds a house or breaks a finger. AI amplifies curiosity, but also laziness.
I chose to use it to get more time for the land, not less. Fewer hours at the computer, more hours among the trees of the future food forest.
What about you? Do you use it? Does it scare you? Has it surprised you? Tell me in the comments, I answer everyone (by hand, promise ✋).
