🇮🇹 Versione italiana più in basso

Dear Hivers, dear front-end teams ( @peakd, @ecency, @actifit, @threespeak, HiveSuite, Hive.blog, InLeo and everyone building on this chain), good morning from the hills of Cagli! ☕

After forty years working in IT and a few years on Hive, I've come to a simple conclusion: on Hive we know everything about our wallets, but very little about who's behind them. 😄

So today I'd like to put an idea on the table: a KYH – Know Your Hiver procedure.

📨 Before writing this post, I already reached out to the developers of two of the most popular front ends, PeakD and HiveSuite.app, through the suggestion channels on their Discord servers, sharing the idea and the proposal with them. Now it's the whole community's turn: a good idea grows better when many heads (and many hearts 🧡) work on it.

🤔 What is KYH?

Think of KYC (Know Your Customer), but without banks, without endless forms and without anyone asking for your grandmother's maiden name.

KYH is an opt-in procedure that certifies there's a real human being behind an account, and rewards that with a "Verified Human" badge on the blockchain.

Not who you are. Just that you are. 👤

🛡️ Why do we need it?

The main reason is simple: one person should not be able to collect rewards through dozens of accounts.

We've all seen them: accounts that vote for each other, born the same day, writing the same post with slightly different synonyms, with the same passion for self-upvoting. Maybe they're a big, close-knit family. Maybe they're one person with a lot of free time and a lot of browser tabs. 🙃

Every reward that goes to an account farm is a reward that doesn't go to a real author, a real photographer, a real gardener or a real runner.

🌱 Other benefits

  • 🎯 Smarter curation: curators and communities can choose to give priority to verified authors
  • 🎁 Fairer airdrops, contests and giveaways: 1 human = 1 share, not 1 human = 47 shares
  • 🗳️ "One human, one voice" polls: alongside stake-based voting, sometimes it's nice to know what people think
  • 🏃 Fitness and proof-of-activity dApps: real steps by real legs
  • 🤖 Fewer bots, spam and AI content mills
  • 🎭 Fewer impersonators and scammers: harder to pretend to be someone else
  • 🤝 More trust for newcomers, local businesses and brands joining Hive
  • 🔗 A shared standard: every dApp can read the same badge, no need to reinvent the wheel

⚙️ How could it work? A few ideas

1. Completely optional. Nobody is forced to verify. Unverified accounts keep all their rights. Pseudonymity is part of Hive's soul and must stay that way.

2. No personal data on-chain. Ever. Only the badge (and at most a hash or a zero-knowledge proof) is written on the blockchain. Documents, faces and names stay off-chain, or better yet, are never stored at all.

3. Verification levels, for example:

  • 🥉 Bronze: vouched for by 3 already-verified Hivers (a web of trust)
  • 🥈 Silver: a short video call with a community verifier
  • 🥇 Gold: met in person at a meetup or at HiveFest (hugs optional, handshake recommended 🤝)

4. A decentralized network of verifiers, not a single central authority. Verifiers could be rewarded with a small amount through a DHF proposal.

5. One human, one "main" account. Alt accounts, projects and bots can be declared and linked, but only one counts as "the human".

6. Revocable and renewable. The badge can be revoked in case of abuse (with a fair appeal process) and renewed every year or two.

7. A common standard across front ends. A custom_json or a shared badge account that PeakD, Ecency, HiveSuite, Actifit, InLeo, 3Speak and every other app can read and display in the same way.

🐶 A small confession

My dog @choko.shock has his own Hive account. I'm afraid he would not pass the KYH. 🐾

But we could think of a dedicated badge for him too: KYH – Know Your Hound. Verified Lagotto, certified ball chaser. 🎾

🙏 Over to you

This is just a starting point, not a finished project. I'd love to hear from:

  • front-end teams: would you be interested in building a common standard together?
  • developers: what's the most elegant way to do it on-chain while respecting privacy?
  • every Hiver: would you get verified? What worries you? What would you add?

Let's talk about it in the comments. And if anyone wants to do their Gold verification in person, the door of Ca' Paradiso is open: a glass of local wine helps a lot in recognizing a real human being. 🍷😉

⚙️ Come potrebbe funzionare? Qualche idea

1. Del tutto facoltativo. Nessuno è obbligato a verificarsi.

Ma potremmo pensare anche per lui a un badge dedicato: KYH – Know Your Hound. Lagotto verificato, inseguitore di palline certificato. 🎾
